Leave in gear and it won't start until you press clutch,
But seemingly only after MY07
I will probably be corrected on that
I hope you are not correct, how can you recover from a steep angle if you cannot start in gear?
Mine cranks over in gear. I tried it this morning. Most modern cars won't crank unless the clutch pedal is down. Freelander SE 2005 Auto.
D3 TDV6. Gone.

If you are off road and going up a very steep incline then get stuck the only safe way to stop is to switch off the ignition.
When you have selected reverse, start the car in gear and then you safely reverse down, this is normal practise. I would be very surprised if it cannot be done in the manual D3, I shall try it tonight while I am out. - Been out and worked as expected, you do not have to have foot on clutch to start.
I had a D2 and used this feature many times when off road, I switched to JEEP and you have to have the clutch engaged to start the engine - 1 of the reasons I came back to LR.
