To answer your question "what is the difference?", most estate car tailgates aren't designed with both ends capable of functioning like the tin opening attachment on a Swiss Army Knife! I dread to think what might have happened if your good lady had hit her head on one of those, instead of the blunt tailgate on the Galaxy Shocked

The cars doing the rounds are pre production and not even road legal they are missing some mechanical components, engine management components and airbags according to one of the reps. That said the majority is as of production so I would say this " grand tour" is good live proving for wear and tear.
So if we consider theses cars have had say 100k of people playing with them it's probably A good few years worth of normal usage for the the doors, seats and buttons.

Back on the design of the tailgate if you look at it when it's open, the depth at the top is big including the spoiler, I pointed this out as one of my spaces at work is low and even if I restrict the tailgate opening it's the height where it hinges that will be the problem it's a good 9 inches when open I would say.

Sorry i could not disagree more, the tailgate on the Galaxy we had is just as capable of injury as the D5 and for that matter most other modern estate type cars

Hmmm...

Let's go back through my back catalogue of estate cars and see if anything came close to being this dangerous:

2 x Disco, no.
3 x Freelander 2, nope.
3 x Volvo V70 phase 2, no.
1 x Citroen C5, no.
3 x Citroen XM, nope.
1 x Peugeot 406, erm, no.
2 x Peugeot 405, no.
2 x Montego, no.
1 x Peugeot 505, no.
1 x Peugeot 504, not that one either.

19 Estate cars later and none of them had bottom corners like this. As you say that "most other modern estate cars" are similar, please would you show me a picture of just one example? I'm struggling to think of one.

Google Tailgate and you will see that most if not all cars have 'flatter' doors so if you were to hit your head you hit the door card rather than pointy corner of the door skin.

I managed 6 months with a DS without banging my head on the tailgate, also survived 3 Fl2s and an Evoque. I'm pretty sure I'll be okay with the D5.

No amount of engineering can compensate for a persons carelessness.

No, but good engineering can mitigate the outcome of carelessness!

The fact that we're all talking about this potential danger means LR will now know of it also... makes easy work for the lawyers if anyone is seriously hurt by a needlessly sharp design.

Galaxy tailgates are terrible. I had one as a company hack and it was nasty. That doesn't excuse the D5 though.

Looking at facebook, with LRs post about the D5 showing something getting loaded in, and showing the 'flap' in operation. There are 1000's of negative replies, I only found two positive replies. I think LR might have to do something with this, it's becoming a big deal.

As an aside, apart from Range Rover and X5, what other cars have a split tailgate that could be called as practical as a D3/4?

Simple fix:- take the corner off the door then reshape the light as shown here in yellow. You will still hit your head but at least you wont get impaled.

in the same segment nothing comes even close. You have to look at more commercial oriented offerings for similar load space and drop tailgate - hard top navaras etc.

Dunno what you're all talking about - never had ANY issues with the D3 tailgate, nor the jap truck (with its lovely split tailgate, ha ha up yours!) and wouldn't expect to have any with the D5 either Rolling Eyes
