MOT question and probably a stupid one

Sitting at my desk today bored out my tree, I wondered how they test the handbrake on the Disco 4?

I have only ever seen rollers for 2 wheels (1 axle) and then they spin the rear wheel and apply the handbrake-test complete.

But the Disco is 4 wheel drive so that wont work, and if you drive it down the road and pull the brake button, I think it applies all the brakes?

So please educate me-I am stumped Question

Hi

http://www.mot-test.net/mock-test/brakes/

Think they also use a decelerometer device

A tapley meter comes to mind

Know that’s not much help Whistle

Hi

Just found this , however it mentions rollers and know I wouldn’t allow mine to be put on a 2WD roller

Don’t know if there’s a special way to allow for this test ???

http://mtaeta.info/board/67/land-rover-vsi

As of 27th April 2017 no VSI is availible for this vehicle :

Testing the EPB with a decelrometer is not suitable

The EPB requires testing in the brake rollers as follows:

noteNOTE: To carry out the electric park brake (EPB) rolling brake test, the following requirements must be observed:

The ignition is turned ON, but the engine is NOT running
The front wheels are stationary
The rear wheels must be driven for a minimum of 5 seconds at a constant speed between 1.5 and 5.5 mph (2.5 and 9 km/h)
All vehicles
Position the vehicle on the rolling brake tester.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
noteNOTE: The following step must be carried out to allow 10 minutes before the transmission returns to auto park.

Turn the TCS to the NEUTRAL position and turn the ignition OFF.
Turn the ignition ON.
All vehicles
cautionCAUTION: Make sure that the front wheels are stationary.

noteNOTE: The EPB warning indicator will illuminate to confirm the vehicle is in the inspection mode.

Once the vehicle is moving on the rolling brake tester at a speed between 1.5 and 5.5 mph (2.5 and 9 km/h), the inspection mode is activated.
NOTES:

noteThe parking brake will be applied in increments.

noteIf the EPB switch is applied more than 4 times, no further increments of application to the parking brake force will occur.

Apply and release the EPB switch 4 times in succession.
Release the EPB switch.
Remove the vehicle from the rolling brake tester.

This is the official procedure supplied from Land Rover( at a cost subscription only ) which has been copied and pasted by me from the workshop manual, please print or save it somewhere in the event one of these vehicles is presented for test

I might not be the best, but i was always in the top one

Wouldn't let mine near a roller

The place I use, put a decelerometer on the footwell floor and run up and down the car park testing both park brake and service brakes

I thought that, but when you pull the parking brake on the move, it puts all the brakes on...

Actually I think you are right. I am sure that if you apply the handbrake whilst moving, it acts as an emergency brake on all wheels.

you hold it up for 5 seconds I believe then …. bang. all wheels. never tried it but did make me wonder what would be going through anyone's head in those 5 seconds. Hopefully NOT the windscreen.

in fact … found this where Gareth talks about it being done at 110 mph. doesn't mention 5 seconds though.

I had a go at emergency braking in a FFRR down at Eastnor LRE last year.

Pulling up, and holding up, the EPB activates something in the ABS system and you stop very rapidly!

It certainly isn't just the normal park brakes going on.

Cheers
