Fitting a Witter Tow Bar - Please Help! |
|
Hi All,
I fitted a Witter Tow Bar to my D3 today, but could not fit the side arms. This was because the M14 bolts were missing from the Chassis!
The Witter instructions say: "Remove M14 Bolts (x) from the inner faces of the chassis". These are the bolts that are missing.
Does anyone have the means to find the part number for me, or let me know the length that these M14's should be?
Help appreciated, Andy

Are the holes for the bolts there? A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

I will assume yours is an 08 or 09 MY, as they are not there...
There should be 2 long silver tubes in the fitting kit, the M14 bolts (in he kit also) screw into that My D3 Build Thread

Hi Andy, I suspect you have a 2008.5MY or later car. I had this problem too. From 2008.5 onwards, the bolts were no longer fitted in the chassis rails. My Witter towbar came with both bolts and a sleeve for each one which you have to insert into the hole in the chassis, where the bolts used to be on the older model. This hole has a keyhole shape on one side of the chassis rail. It allows you to insert the sleeve. I did this with the bolt and towbar arm in the hole from the other side as I was worried about dropping the sleeve into the rail and losing it. The sleeve enables you to tighten the bolts without distorting the chassis I guess.
If you look in my gallery there are a couple of pictures showing this. Insert the sleeve into the larger bit of the keyhole and then offer up the bolt from the other side. I hope that helps you.

Hi All,
Thanks for your reply's.
My car is a 2006. The holes are there and the Bolt thread is visible. I think the car has had a towbar fitted in the past as the electrics are in place, but whoever removed it took the chassis bolts as well without replacing them
Kind regards, Andy

Hi Splitpin,
I would appreciate that very much. I called Landrover in Cambridge "The nearest dealer with stock open today - and they said that they had the bolts in stock!!
I drove over there this morning (150 mile round trip), and the bolts they gave me were 100mm long!!! They only seem to go half way in (me thinks they've given me the wrong bolts)!!
Kind regards, Andy

Yep just checked and they are 40mm thread length.
You could cut those down if the thread goes all the way along.
They are not any special bolt.

Hi Splitpin,
Thanks for the confirmation - The bolts only have a couple of CM of thread at the end so can't do that.
Thanks for your efforts
Kind regards, Andy

You could use some of the witter spacer tube to make the bolt "shorter" as a temp fix
I don't have any sorry,
It's a M14x2mm bolt with thread length 35 to 40mm

but if the previous owner left those bolts out, didnt they also hold the bracket for the swinging weights on the pre 08 models?

Hi AL,
I don't think so. I confess to not knowing exactly what you mean, but the is a bracket that lies flush with the inside of the chassis rails on either side that heads off towards the bumper. Obviously without the bolts, it moves about a bit. Is that what you are referring too?
Kind regards, Andy

The outer bolt will hold the bracket in place.

it is, and it sounds like you've only had the outer bolt holding it in place.

I have the same problem on my new to me 06MY. Some one has removed the towbar and taken all the fixings. The weights are swinging around but are held in place by a smaller bolt. I tried to get some replacement bolts from TLO but he sya they are not available as a spare part.
Does anybody have any other info such as length and diameter of tube, grade of bolt etc. A picture would be fantastic.
