Just did my V8 alternator... I can vouch that there is no need to remove the fan on V8, job can be done from underneath apart from levering the tensioner, as has already been mentioned.

A friend borrowed the car before christmas and it just shut down on her, she called the AA who charged the battery up enough to get home. I checked the alternator voltage (after doing a full charge on the ctek), it didn't get above 11.9V. The dash light has never come on. There had been a whine from under the bonnet and a whistle through the stereo for a couple of weeks, and now I think of it I've replaced the battery twice in the past couple of years, so perhaps it was undercharging for ages, but just enough to keep the light from coming on.

New Denso from AF fitted, voltage now 13.8-14.0... is this enough? I was expecting 14.4ish....

Thanks for the guide, helped me out this morning

One small addition is that I used two 10mm spanners braced against the belt idler to knock the fan loose
