Add an OE look sunglass holder to your D3 or D4
Allright guys, I´m up for another mod
I found that my sunglasses always were in the way in my D3, so I started the search for an OE sunglass holder, but obviously, no such thing exists
Searching the internet, I found that some guys have been using a Ford Focus sun visor holder. This holder doesn´t fit right in, but with some parts swapped over from the original roof handle, it will be a sweet mod
This one is grey, and most similar to the interior colour of the D3/D4. Do not buy the cream coloured one. It does not matter if you buy version 1 or 2, as the mounts won´t be used anyway (I got the V.1)
Ok, so here we go:
- First, take out your original roof handle. It is secured by 2 phillips screws to the roof. You have to snap open two small lids to get to the screws

- Now, take out the pins securing your roof handle to the mounts. These can be pushed out with small pliers.

- This is what it looks like disassembled. Note that the pins have been pushed back in here, with the spring and damper on. Take the damper off as you will need it.

- Now to the sunglass holder. Take a pair of pliers and remove the pins securing the mounts.

- These are the parts disassembled from the holder. You can discard everything except the retainer spring and the 2 securing pins (not shown here)

- Take the original LR mount and assemble it like this on the sunglass holder.

- Secure the pins with super glue before pushing them all the way in.

- On the other side, test fit the damper. You can see there is a lip on the outer side of the damper. Make a small slot in the sunglass holder with an exacto knife to secure the lip of the damper.

- Now assemble this side, and put a small&thin piece of cardboard in between the damper and sunglass holder. There will be a small play in the damper if you don´t. Also, use your exacto knife to cut the slot a little bit wider where the arrow is pointing. This way the sunglass holder will open fully once in place.

- Now put your sunglass holder back in your car and enjoy the result
I thought about putting the holder in coffee for a few days to darken the color. That way it would match the interior colour perfectly, but we´ll see!

Didn't someone do this with a Ford version that fitted straight on and was a good colour match?
I'm not sure, I saw a thread about one from a ford c-max, but the picture link was broken..
Also you can see one here, but it's cream colored and ford mounts used, which requires drilling and doesn't have the damper on it

The newer shape vw beetles have these as well don't know if you'd get a better colour match from one of them maybe

Nicely done, good to see some improvisation with a good finish.
Does this make you a Hero of Telemark .....?
Ok I'll fetch my coat

No hero, only an improviser
I'd advise you to try and put the sunglass holder covered in coffee for a few days to try to achieve the exact same colour as the interior. Maybe it will work, depending on the plastics
Anyway, once it is in place, you'll forget about the color difference in an hour...
