Advice on slight transfer box oil leak
Hi guys
I'm new to this site, but as the recent proud new owner of a 2006 Discovery 3 I'm sure I'll be visiting regularly for tips and advice, it's a great place for everything Disco! You've already helped when I fitted the towbar electrics, many thanks.
I've had the car for about 3 weeks now and hopefully it's a good one, (it seemed to be the best I could find after about 4 months looking), but I recently noticed a slight misting of oil underneath, on what I think is the transfer box. (I've taken a picture but I'm not sure how to upload it here yet)... doh!
I think it's just weeping out of the gasket at the bottom of the casing, (around where there are three star/torx bolts and the drain plug). I suppose it could even be the drain plug that's leaking, I'll check the tightness of it tomorrow.
I've been reading about problems with the drive shaft oil seals, but I don't think it's this because the casing is dry around there, it's definitely just around the bottom of the case.
Do you think it's anything to worry about?
I got three months warranty with the car, so I've still got a few weeks remaining if I need to get it sorted, but as it was bought from an Evans Halshaw garage in Middlesbrough, I don't want to take a trip back up there if it's not necessary.
Cheers again
Simon

Hi and welcome, you may find the following links useful to learn about posting pictures etc. With regard to your oil leak, keep an eye on it. Clean it off and see if it reappears quickly.

Thanks for the link to photo uploading and posting.
Here is the picture I took... (hopefully!)
I presume because diffs etc. probably don't hold lots of oil, you can quickly lose enough to cause problems if you're not careful? There is also a slight transmission whine for a second or two when pulling up the revs through second gear (I think it's second, might be third), but I thought this could be normal for a big 4x4? I've only ever had front wheel drive cars in the past you see. I'm starting to worry now that the box could be low on oil, hence the noise!
I don't recall seeing any there when buying the car and since then I've done about 700 miles. I'll give it a wipe as you say and keep checking.
Thanks again

Simon,
Jusy a couple of pointers i've picked up on this forum about oil levels etc.
If you're going to check the oil level, the diff oil is a special oil. It's approx £15 per litre and is best bought from your local Landrover dealer parts counter. Do a search on transfer box oil levels or topping up. The transfer box is filled until the oil comes out the filler hole - unlike the diffs where they only need a certain amount putting in which is less than filling to the filler hole.Tim

That's roughly how my transfer box looked just before LR changed it under warranty.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

That's a very clean transfer case . May well have been washed with degreaser ( Gunk odour
is a give-away . ) before you saw it .......

Having had a transfer box leak myself I was constantly worried about the oil level until I got it fixed. I had a few drops on the driveway each night for about 3 weeks but was glad to say the level hardly dropped.
More importantly is getting the leak cured. I would first give it a good cleaning off, and see if it re-appears. The trip up to middlesborough is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Also can you not take it to any Evans Halshaw dealer?

looks as if you are dealing with the same issue I used to have but ended up forcing stealers to split it and reseal it under warranty
as I recall someone on here did DIY on that job with great success
cheers

The work I did on the transfer box did indeed involve splitting the casings, but I don't think big SI will be splitting his just yet given it is under warranty, the roads up to middlesborough aren't that bad
