Engine seized out of warranty

Has anyone been to Land Rover with a seized engine when out of warranty?

Mine stopped on motor way last night Sad , my wife says it felt like she'd hit a pot hole then no power and gearbox fault alarm came up. AA tried starting but wouldn't turn over, I have put a spanner on crank shaft pulley today and it's solid so suspect it's seized.

Same thing happened to my friends one about 3 weeks ago, he has kept up his warranty and LR have sorted it out, he says the bill would have been £16000 Shocked . I have spoken to the central customer relations people and after a lot of stuttering and careful selection of words they said if it has seized they may be able to offer some assistance. Whatever that means.

I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else without a warranty and what the outcome was??

Thanks for reading.

Some folks on here have had significant contribution even when out of warranty, provided it has a full LR Service History.

Sure someone with experience will be along later

Yep, it seems it's a not unusual problem.

If you use the forum search function, I'm sure lots will pop up unfortunately.

Sorry to hear of the problem but how long is it outside any warranty with LR and has it been serviced as per schedule by the franchise dealer?

The service book is fully up to date with all but 2 of the stamps from LR dealerships the others from independent garages and I've just had the big service (cam belts) done at a LR Dealership. They should be happy enough with that.......shouldn't they??

They usually want a full LR history, but having the last major one with belts done at LR might go in your favour, fingers crossed for you.

That could be critical.... how many miles ago?

Did you replace the oil pump at the same time?

^^ - I hope so - just had my belts done

I'm sure the revised pump was fitted in later model D3's, so assume in D4's???

Someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon hopefully

I have a very late D3 which had the revised pump fitted.

Nevertheless I changed it for a new oilpump when the belts were changes, both as a precaution, and also a new oil pump undoubtedly performs better than one that has done many tens of thousands of miles.

Maybe I'm a bit obsessive about things like oil pumps & tyres - but I sleep well !

The other point about the last service is whether the oil filter was correctly fitted (search the forum for more details.)

^^ After last service I had I checked the valley between the cylinder banks for oil given the horror stories on earlier posts

Charles610 - how often do you check your oil, I check every day before start up - I know its not considered 100% accurate but if you see a significant drop you know you have an issue that needs urgent investigation - and its easy to use.

The major service was carried out around 1000 miles ago, there is no mention of an oil pump exchange on the receipt so I guess it wasn't changed, nor was I given the option.

I also check the oil every few days with no major fluctuations since the service.

NJSS I'm not sure about oil filter fitting and can no-longer check as the car is now with LR, Fingers crossed for a favourable outcome Sad

I hope Land Rover stump up some money to get this sorted out for you!

There certainly seems to be more incidences of D4s with engine failure, off to check my oil....
