Bonnet needs slamming to close - fixed..

The bonnet on my D3 has never been easy to close and always needed a hefty slam - even then one side would not always catch. I adjusted the latch mechanism and the rubber bung in every way possible but still no joy.

After removing the grill and studying the mechanism it became apparent that the U bolt had worn ever so slightly - the car has done 36K miles and the bonnet has not been opened very often!

I could just feel a very slight ridge with my fingernail but that was enough to stop the mechanism latching. In effect the worn bit could not be pushed against the spring loaded lock because the outer casing of the latch was pressed against the unworn bit of the U bolt.

Two minutes filing it flat and hey presto works a treat. No more slamming the bonnet shut.

ps - I changed the front diff oil breather whilst I was at it - needless to say the old one was clogged solid after 36K miles and would not allow air to escape. Worth doing to prevent blown oil seals.
