I admire your knowledge and patience on what is clearly a complicated bit of kit. I loved the premium sound system in my disco 4 but was thinking £400 would replace the lot. Towards the end of my ownership occasionally the tcd would freeze and shut down refusing to start up again that day even after a dinner stop but would always reboot the next day. If you can get to the bottom of these problems I think you would have a que of customers at your door. When I mentioned my problem to the main dealer they all went a pale colour knowing I had already replaced the front diff and turbo actuator that week.

Well I stated playing with cars before there were any electronics in them at all. In fact one of my first electronics project was to build what was then called an "Electronic Ignition" system Thumbs Up Not sure it ever made any difference Whistle

Being an electronics engineer in the computer industry electronic systems don't really phase me. The most bus is just a computer network, like Ethernet. The only difference is the protocols run on the network. In fact the original computer networks were a ring based topology, but because the whole network failed when one node failed it fairly quickly died a death. Something that seems to have been lost on the MOST consortium Whistle

One of the symptoms of my audio failure was that the TSD would freeze at the LR splash screen. During the MOT / Service I asked them to diagnose the audio.display issues. They re-flashed the IHU but when they tried to re-flash the TSD it failed. So their response was you need to replace the TSD, that'll be £1400 thank you sir! As you can tell I declined their kind offer, especially as they hadn't actually diagnosed the issue and proved to me that the TSD was the cause.

I believe the whole premium Audio system was a £5000 option for the D3 ( I stand to be corrected by anyone who knows better Thumbs Up )

But in researching for this project I found replacement costs (new inc vat) for the HKL7 Amp £1000, TSD £1300 (not fitted), IHU with 6CD changer £1000. That's without trying for discounts from forum sponsors. On top you have the GPS, phone, tmc units!! So very expensive system Big Cry

Given my experience on this project I would certainly invest in some fibre optic cable and links. first stop is to link out the phone and tmc, having said that it didn't help me. So as you can see I bypassed the loom and connected just the IHU, TSD and Amp. You can actually connect the IHU and Amp together if it's an audio issue. I actually got a S/H IHU and TSD from a breaker to help with diagnosis (nowhere near £1400 Wink )

Having read your posts, was wondering whether you know how much a replacement cable that does the sat nav to radio link as that seemed to be the problem on yours and how do you get at the back of the two units ?
Have just had a look under the drivers seat and when removing the optic cable from back of Harman Kardon unit can see the red light on the ingoing cable end .

Did your radio say Vehicle fault system shutting down??

thanks if you get to reply to any of this,

Confused

Hi,

Regarding the replacement cable I have just ordered one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321608673365?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT

Currently I have a 3 metre cable in place ( bit unwieldy! ).

You need to pull off the "H" panel, helpful youtube video here:

The screen is held in place by 4 screws two at the front an two at rear, once removed swing the screen up from the front, but be careful the wires are short. look up underneath and pop the clip on the MOST (orange) cable first, then the blue connector on the left hand side, you can now swing up a bit further allow you to remove the grey connector.

If you want to test the system with the screen removed you'll need one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fibre-optic-Loop...19fcbd1f59

Just plug it into the MOST cable you disconnected from the screen.

No my issue didn't shutdown the vehicle, I just lost all Audio/Radio/BT and the screen kept resetting.

Have you tried a HARD reset?

Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Thanks for this info , very useful, now next Sat is sorted , more phaffing around with Land rover electrics, sorted the key fob today by reconnecting the spliced wires in the passenger side footwell . One small battle won just the entertainment to deal with. Just wish we had your in depth knowledge .

Many thanks will post how we get on soon,

Smile

During my efforts to figure out my problem I came across a Denso theory of operation document. I hope it helps those trying to understand how the system works:

http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...ration.pdf

I'm not sure this is going to work, but here goes....

EDIT: It worked Thumbs Up Martin is there a good repository for this document which would be easy for people to find, rather than my gallery? Very Happy

From bad to worse

Hi have disconnected the radio and taken out , phoned around to find somewhere to take it to get it tested and they said don't forget the code!!! Do these systems need a code ??? can't find anything in original info , booklets that mention one. Have reconnected it and dead! . Didn't need a code when we had a new battery , so hoping not.

Sad

As far as I know it doesn't need a code. I bought a Radio/IHU from a breakers and it worked straight off.

I assume you have a 6CD-465 VUX500330 or similar Thumbs Up

There are two grey connectors on the back, as far as I know it should power up with just those connected, if you have a MOST loop cable that would be belt and braces.

It does need to communicate with the CAN bus to power up, I think it needs to communicate with the instrument cluster in order to down load the CCF (Car Configuration File).

Smile That's good news , suppose I'll have to let my other half off the hook for unplugging it then!

Just need to get it tested now, thanks again ....

Car went in to have the radio tested (not a LR dealer) , they say nothing wrong that they can find but that is needs an audio software update which only a dealer can do. Do you know anything about them??

Neutral

I don't know anything about audio S/W updates, I think my dealer tried uploading the latest S/W but they failed to update the SatNav screen, that's when they decided that I needed a new one Whistle

You could try Wiggs I know he updates the BT modules.
