My D3 has the Jag ring fitted. Came like that, fitted like that, still going like that (along with all the other Jag engines I have fitted over the years)

Great, so it sounds like they're all exactly the same and I'm doing all this for nothing.

Well, the new one is fitted. I'll let you all know what happens when I put it back together.

Yes, finally. And I'm kicking myself.
Let's start this post by saying I SCREWED UP.
Crankshaft timing was out about a tooth - I used the marks painted onto the crankshaft sprocket and the plate behind it previously (nothing to do with me), and 'confirmed' it with a welding rod down the injector hole in cylinder number 1 to check for TDC - seemed to match fine.
Anyway, after removing the gearbox and having someone come in and change the reluctor ring (which sat in the same position - I knew then that wasn't going to work), it still wouldn't start and he had explained that the timing tool for the crankshaft was basically never used in the dealers because you had to take the starter out. I ended up buying the timing tools myself on ebay (they were a terrible fit by the way), and the minute I looked at the timing hole in the flywheel I knew that's what it had been all along.
Anyway, I got away with it and she's now running again. Thanks for your time those that read this post.
Moral of the story - buy the timing tools...

Not a bad plan Alan!
Yes - I learned loads. Like don't ever touch anything with a 2.7 TDV6 ever again.
