MOT............Big woes....................
To carry out service and full check over for MOT. Replace split rear wiper blade. Replace worn front and rear brake discs and pads. Re-inflate spare tyre. Replace worn N/S/F anti roll bar bush. Replace worn N/S/R anti roll bar bush. Replace worn N/S/R track control arm. Check and reset tracking as necessary. MOT test.
Grand total £938.92
Oh, and the road tax is up at the end of the month as well
Also.......................
Please note: O/S/F tyre wearing on inner edge.
Rear upper wishbones - front bushes deteriorated and coming apart.
Cambelts due next year.
Nail in offside rear tyre.
So that will be another grand next year.
Looks like I have to sell a kidney. Oh I forgot, I have kidney problems
I bought the car off of an ex-forum member only last year with a full MOT and have only done 4,000 miles since. However, I do wonder about the last MOT, am I right in thinking this
By the way it's a 2009 with 72k on the clock.

I don't think you can blame your own failure to maintain your vehicle on the previous owner just because it's just failed it's MOT.
Lets face it, there's nothing majorly bad in that lot and nothing that wouldn't have worn or required replacement in time.
These cars need you to keep on top of them, ownership is an ongoing project, they can be expensive but not all repairs are wallet killers. If you wanted cheap motoring maybe you should consider a different a marque or consider doing some work yourself and buying parts from forum supporters and sponsors. Mods:

I had some major bills soon after buying from a member too but it was all consumable stuff and not unexpected at the age and mileage and I was informed by them and the forum.
Three years on I have no regrets and actually think it's been more reliable than my Golf VR6 and BMW 330d Touring and the cost of ownership not that different.
I've benefited from loads of free advice from enthusiastic members and the free research this forum offers. Best of all though are the sponsors and guys like Geoff who I rate more highly than any dealer or indie I've ever used. They save you time and a packet.VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

I bought mine in Oct and cost £1200 the first two months with a rear diff recon and propshaft, and before a years out I'm looking at around a fair few £ks having been spent to sort it all out (suspension refresh, new mirror housing, new discs and pads all round, injector issues, torque converter on the way out, changing to the zf metal sump, tyres and more!)
Just need to hope once it's all sorted you'll have a looked after and cared for car
As for MOTs, I know places that will pass with no advisories as long as not dangerous, but if you're keeping the car I'd rather get a full report and get things sorted properly.

I figured on £3k per year general upkeep and preventative maintenance once warranty lapsed and around 60k miles had passed in order to keep it to a high standard, and spent it, slightly more some years and slightly less in others.
I ended up running a very very reliable tight and clean Disco up to 115k miles. You are a way off what could be considered to be a necessary spend for the complexity, size, type, and capability of car just yet 1953.Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

Look on the bright side
spend now and spend next year and you may have much to spend much the following year
just sold my rrs (2005) and after 15 months total spend was £372 most of which was the gearbox flush in March headlamp washer pump all that was needed for the MOT, oil and filter service done
although the previous owner did spend £4k+ a few months before I bought it

The MoT failure parts comes to about £250 from AF.
I'd replace all the roll bar links rather than doing one side F&R as they're cheap, pretty easy to fit and best replaced in axle pairs.
I'd carefully set the length of the rear track control arm to be the same as the old one if the rear tyre wear is OK. Keep an eye on the front tyre wear and only get the tracking done if the wear is high...otherwise wait until the wishbones are changed.

Hi Moo,
It was The Pike Associates Ltd, Littleton Garage, Semington who are a Land Rover indie.
I use them as they are only £45/hr plus VAT
Have used Melksham Motor Care for years but last year they were £75/hr plus VAT

Warranty...really!?
Be an unusual warranty that covers brake discs and pads.
Even the suspension and steering parts could be considered normal wear and tear parts...at least, that how most of D3 seems to think of them.
Oh, and at £45+VAT per hour they're either charging for double the hours it should be, or making a packet on the parts.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

It looks like the various suspension bushes are "consumables"... although 72,000 miles is a bit of a poor show. I guess if you own a Landrover you learn to accept that much of the car is badly designed in terms of longevity - a warranty is essential!2007 Base D3 - Buckingham Blue

I am a happy D3 owner but I have learned that every two years I am being told brake discs need replacing as for little rubber bushes the car is 2.7 tons and they are easy to DIY as for most things to be replaced if you have a bit of knowledge you can save a fortune, mine came out of the stealers with advisery's totalling £2700 front lower suspension arms track rod arms & ends front discs anti roll bar bushes rear pads, so I bought the parts and 7hrs later I was smiling £500 jobs done, these cars are not trouble free by any means but like all modern cars out there now they have to many gizmos I've owned mine for 5.5 years and I would say about £1000 on average to service & maintain, but if you love your car like me then there's the haded cost of playing with her
