LED trailer light problem |
|
Have just bought a new caravan which tows beautifully behind my TDV6. Only problem is the LED indicator lights on the van flash weakly and constantly whenever it is connected to the car. This continues for about 5 minutes after the ignition is turned off but restarts whenever the electrical system is activated (eg by opening a door, unlocking the car, etc). Apparently this is a known problem with Disco3, RR, Audi, BMW and Merc SUV's and has something to do with the vehicle's diagnostic systems. The local LR dealer was aware of the problem but had no cure. Any idea what the solution is ?

you need to shunt the pulses from the d3s system to prevent this from happening. CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

Flashing LED trailer lights with a D3 |
|
Hi Grahamd...I have just fitted a small module to my trailer that solves the problem of flashing LED trailer lights connected to the Discovery 3. It is a robust diecast box that is portable and inexpensive. It just plugs in between the trailer plug and the vehicle. No installation required. Works well. E-mail led[email protected] for more info and they can deliver one directly to you. Good luck.

I have tried a few different LED lights and the resistor trick and it only works with some.
The narrow pulse is very strong and is only damped slightly by the resistor so that means that the LEDs that respond quick will still pulse. The resistor will however make sure that the car knows the trailer is there. The D3 needs to know if the trailer is there so that it can disable the reverse sensors and prevent auto suspension raising to off road height when the trailer is there. By the way, 10 ohms is JUST low enough. 8.2 ohms is better. I am working on a foolproof electronic method to fix the problem with all LEDS.
