actually we rang them as soon as we got it going, they said thanks for ringing. then about two hours later we got a call from the macanic they sent asking exactly where we were, they hadent cancelled him. CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

Well thought out Chris, necessity is the mother of invention, I'm not sure I would have risked putting 18v into my battery but I suppose the power wouldn't have been all that high.
I guess you will be known now as "McGyver Tyler"

Well there was no danger - the 18 volts of the smaller DeWalt battery was 'pulled down' by the high current flowing into the much bigger car battery - we monitored the voltage across the disco battery, and it never went above 13 and a bit volts - anything up to 14.8 or so is perfectly safe and normal when charging. In addittion, the thin CAT 5 acted as a limiting resitor and makeshift fuse! - if you try anything like this, it's important to make sure the two wires don't touch each other or any other metalwork, as they get pretty hot , and the plastic coating wire insulation would easily melt! the wire will also get a bit floppy when it heats up!
