My spare wheel was stolen and I have a friend who also had theirs stolen. Is this common?
Has anyone got any good ideas how to make the theft more difficult? The wire was cut that holds the spare in place.
Also any tips on where to get a 2nd spare? The dealers wants over £600 to fit a new spare!

squinton just a word of caution here and to other potential posters, as this is a security issue please be carefull with your replies as thieves watch the internet too. as for replacing the stolen wheel, is this not a job for your insurer to worry about ?

I've heard about an RRS having one stolen whilst in a supermarket in the middle of the day
DG I expect you could probably use a crow bar to lever the tyre away from the car - these scumbags don't generally go for the subtle approach.
I'm off to put a worn tyre in the place of my new/unused spare! Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

I cannot see how they'd move it TBH ..it's hard enough getting the frigging thing out when you really need it 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

If you look on ebay you can often get a single wheel and tyre for under £100. Less than your insurance excess I'm sure. Unfortunately the HSE 19" wheels are VERY popular as they take the MTR offroad tyre, so fights tend to break out over them.
I'd be surprised if your original one doesn't end up on ebay very soon. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I could sell you a part worn one for £487.50..... ........No, seriously though, I have had thoughts about this possibility myself(spare wheel theft, that is). There is potential to fabricate some kind of bracketry that could be fixed to the chassis.( there are some brackets with holes in, on the chassis rails inboard of the the rear silencers that some s/steel or whatever angle could be affixed to) extending down to meet a cross piece that could go under the spare wheel, but what with L/R's reluctance, or inability, to fix any of the problems my vehicle has, I really haven't been arsed enough to do any serious work on this. Obviously doing anything like this is bound to hamper the owner, when you need to drop the spare wheel down.

I think you'd have to be pretty determined and very patient to get the spare off.
Where were you parked ?
It would be very obvious if someone was lying under the back of your D3 with an acetylene torch or big wire cutters.

I thought there is a frame not far from spare wheel. Can't one just buy something like bike chain and use it to "attach" the wheel to it.
I'll get my coat.... D3 XS Manual - gone

Yup.
1) Make sure that the cable is tight so the wire can't be accessed to cut from below.
2) Park up against a wall Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

3) Replace spare with spacesaver. No one in their right mind would want this.
4) Get a long range fuel tank conversion
5) Always leave the car in access height to make it harder to 'get in there'
6) Trap a stun grenade between the tyre and the spare well, and pre-pull the pin. May perk up the next LRAssist visit too... Dr. Ian Malcolm:

I parked at Birmingham Airport some years ago in the long term park & the security guy spoke to me to me before I ocked the car up & warned me they had a whole lot of thefts of Disco spares...suggested I put this inside the car whilst I was parked. Did this.
When you think about it anybody wanting a new set of wheels with good tyres has only to target 4 Discos or some crook sees this as an easy target.
Question: How do they cut the cable it isnt really all that visble BREXIT - done properly.

You can stick your hand up between the spokes, it is not very difficult unfrtunately.
