Installing extra 9" lights?

Looking in to how to install three or four 9 inch round led lights. Some say the best way is to install them on a rack on the roof. However I use a skibox every now and then so that probably won´t work.

Best thing for me I think would be installing them in front of the grill. I just do not want to install a big fat ugly bullbar, so what options do I have? I´ve sen combined license plate/lightholders but the look flimsy and not sure they would work very well. Anybody here has done a similar installation or know something that would help me out? Small bullbar would work but haven´t found anything.

Have a search for Dolpants. Lightforce lights set into grille.
Rack mounting gives a better spread of light IMHO, ski box/lights shouldn't be an issue with the right rack

Very nice "Lost for Words"!

Excellent work! I will start making the same! Have you noticed any vibrations? Ever thought about installing a few like these? http://www.autoparts.se/sv/articles/2.259....tag-blankt

I probably will have to when installing 9 inch lights weighing around 3 kg per light.

At present, there are some vibrations over the rough stuff, but they are wedged in pretty well by the grille - which is as yet not reinforced. I plan to reinforce it with something when the second pair go on and that should do the trick. Thumbs Up

What lamps are you looking at fitting?

Dolpants' and Frenchy's installs shown here.

I thought that one issue with rack mounting was glare from the bonnet - didn't Ken stick matt Fablon on his to avoid this?

My strong advice is to get something much better. Thumbs Up

Even if you go for them, there's little point in having three or four. The reason why is that, as crude forward facing LED lamps, they will only throw out a flood beam with little control. Add more and you will have more light, but you will not shift the balance of light any further away, and thus you will not see much, if any, further. More light is not as important as a narrower beam if you want to see further.

To do the intensity calculation, 38800lm over, say, 60 degrees (a realistic figure) is only 46,000cd - not very high at all (good lamps, despite far fewer lumens, can output hundreds of thousands of candela). That figure of 3439lux at 10m is categorically wrong (would make sense if it's out by a factor of ten so I suspect that's the case - 46,000 might have been too generous) and there seems to be an alternative 32000lm figure there also - for cheap LEDs, 100lm/w is more realistic so perhaps that is the correct one.

You would be much better off going for something with a nice narrow beam (if it's LED, you need reflector facing LEDs, but I recommend high-wattage halogen). Four proper driving/spot lamps can give you vision far into the distance, but you could cover every inch of the car in LED arrays and you would still not see as far. Thumbs Up

DrLex! Their installs looks very nice! Thumbs Up

Lost for Words! Appreciate your thoughts. I´m aware that those chinese lights might not be the best quality. Probably less W than advertised too. However I´m not looking for that far reaching light of 500 m +. Quite winding forest roads here in Sweden. More important for me is to light up as much as possible in lets say 2-300 m, to be able to spot the wildlife in time like moose, deer, etc. I know it´s a bit exaggerated to have four lights, but I like the "cool-factor" Very Happy plus I think it makes the car look good. With only two lights on such a big car makes it look like something is missing. Not supposed to insult your choice, just my own thoughts of how I like my car. Used to have four 9 inch halogen lights on my Range Rover. My wife has a small ledbar on her Freelander and I really like the light coming out of that. Much better than my old halogens.
You are absolutely right I could find better quality lights, but that would also make a much bigger hole in my wallet. Very Happy

dlw! That´s a bullbar I think looks good. But I think it is probably not wide enough to put more that two lights on.
