I replaced battery with a new one and all has been fine since then.

If the battery is getting a bit long in the tooth it doesnt give the Glow Plugs enough power to do their job, however another quick way to start the car is to put the ignition to on so the glow plugs try, then open the bonnet and unclip the sensor to the water temperature sender, start the car and then clip the cable back in
Temp gauge goes through the roof until you have plugged it back in but it will start without a problem (My first D3 had a fairly knackered battery and this is how I started when we had the massive freeze a few years ago - it was -15c outside at the time) Must stop buying shiny toys....
