On that we are agreed. I don't like the students that rather than argue against someone they disagree with, campaign to have them banned. Surely education is about learning to discuss, argue, come to conclusions etc.
Also don't much care for the twitterati that comment on everything.

No, it's not the same and that's the point, because "wishing to see people in general being treated fairly and without discrimination" is not the defining factor of political correctness or virtue signalling. PC is the rejection of certain views surrounding empirical questions based on preconception. Virtue signalling is the stating of opinions in such a way as to serve no material purpose than to draw attention to the fact one holds them. Neither is just about holding liberal views, or being polite.
