Any thoughts on the GAP tool? I'm not "take it to the shop" kind of guy. I'd rather buy the tools to fix it myself.

Ok, I now have the Bluetooth Gap Diagnostic tool & am trying to sort out what information I can use to find the issue. Lots of "Circuit High" or "Circuit Low" faults, such as;

Barometric pressure, mass or air flow volume, engine coolant temperature, fuel temprature sensor, powertrain control module/engine control module/transmission control module temprature sensor, intake air temprature sensor, engine oil temprature sensor, system voltage high, system voltage low, it goes on and on for a total of 60 faults.

Not sure where to start!

I did forget to mention I replaced the battery today.

I had an alternator failure about 5 years ago & replaced it then. The indicator of the failure was low power mode on the radio. The vehicle acted normally otherwise. I suppose I could refit the old, poor performing alternator and see what happens.

I remembered a thread on water ingress to the ecu- so looked it up - given you are in the desert maybe that doesn't help. A few nuggets in the thread though.

Thanks for that link - I suppose it could be related to washing the engine compartment??

After playing with the IID tool for a bit, this is the only recurring fault; U0122-87 related to the transfercase.

I have to say, I'm very impressed with the Gap IID tool. And the customer service is excellent!

I see from your screenshot that your alternator is pulling 11.7volts ... That's not enough ... Just checked one of my screenshots and mines pulling 14.1v at idle with IID plugged in. You say your alternator is 5 years old... Is it a Denso OEM? I'm not sure if a battery or short can cause this deficient circuit voltage which causes a series of communication errors... Somebody else may be able comment.

If you have washed the engine bay, you need to check the plugs on the ecu's that live behind the battery compartment. It's a reasonably common fault in that water gets in and corrodes the pins. This causes all sorts of errors and symptoms.

On a right hand drive tdv6 they sit low down behind the battery. Not sure where they are on a lhd V8, but will be at the back of one of the enviro boxes.

Guys... I figured it out. When I changed the air filter a few weeks prior I blew out the air box with compressed air. To keep debris out of the intake I used some paper shop towels to block the opening. Apparently it took a few weeks for them to block the mass airflow meter enough to cause the enigine to quit. Embarrassing? Yes.

Glad you got it sorted. Funny how often the answer lies in " so, what have you done recently?"
