Had similar happen in a car of mine, and I thought it had fried ecu, but a replacement battery was all that was needed, so it might be worth trying one

Good grief, that's just so wrong.
They'll only do that IF they believe they're at fault and as the OP is still trying to prove who caused the problem, they're never going to do that until they're found at fault.
As the vehicles keeper, I would tactfully suggest it's up to the OP to prove who is liable / at fault and then recover costs.
