Slow starting disco 3 (not just cold weather)
Hi all.
I've posted on here before about slow starting on my disco 3 and most have said glow plugs. I've spoke with a few land rover engineers that haven't had the car when cold and have just said glow plugs.
I know the cars are renowned for poor starting due to plugs but I just have a gut feeling it's not the plugs.
There is a company near me that will charge £900 to replace all 6 plugs. This is guaranteed whether it takes 2 hours or 20 hours and even if all 6 need drilling out but I don't want to jump at this as part of me thinks this may not be the issue.
I've had the check and apparently 3 of the 6 aren't working but I get some days it starts ok then I get 10.days or so it takes a while to start.
Below is a link to the YouTube video showing the slow start.
I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what my issues could be if it's not the glow plugs.
Thanks in advance.
Dan

I can't help with diagnosis of your poor starting, but i can tell you that my D3 which doesn't have a single glow plug that works starts fine in the current UK climate. It take a little longer to fire below 10Deg & struggles below freezing.
So i'd suggest the underlying problem is elsewhere & only have 3 of 6 plugs in service isn't helping
Hope you find the problem

Hi Geohobi,
The possible issues which might be affecting your poor start are numerous to say the least. I would agree with Skagg and your own instincts that this is not glow plug related. Realistically, you need to have the codes read which should eliminate a large portion of the possibilities, or at least whittle it down if not actually nail it!

Picking ur brains plse guys if i may out of curiosity
Could something like a blocked / dirty fuel filter ever cause slow starting and with the pressure fuel test point at the back of the engine can that be used to verify if a filter is restricted plse
Or as it actually starts it can’t be a fuel issue
Hope u don’t mind me asking , I just always find it interesting learning
Thks guys

What are the injector balance values? That’ll show the injectors condition. I had similar starting, even in warm conditions, and was sorted when a set of low miles used injectors was fitted.
With old injectors
With replaced injectors

The short answer is yes it could be, plus everything Henda, DSL, has suggested and a whole lot more besides!
You will drive yourself nuts playing the guessing game! Sometimes you can get lucky, or you can waste a lot of time trying. Best practice is to have the codes read, and you will find the response on here pretty rapid and accurate if not bang on!

It isn’t just the injector values it is also the spray pattern of the injectors, the value is how much is being injected into each cylinder, but it’s no good if it’s like a water pistol and not a fine fan shaped spray. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Mine takes about 3 seconds to start, but only the first start in the morning, it starts pretty much straight away after that, even if left for a few hours, almost as if their is a slight leak somewhere letting in air/ or fuel draining back to the tank ?
Andi.

Sorry GS,
I'm just realising now that I was actually responding to you when I thought I was responding to Geohobi.
