To put it into perspective it would be useful to know the total number of Discos that went to Oval in 2019.

It’s a great test of perception vs reality. It’s a significant problem, but not the problem that many owners were expecting Thumbs Up

It's actually what I have been saying for years ....It's not a 'significant' problem ....just another average reason for any engine to go pop ....happens to all the marques to a lesser or greater degree.

But hey.... let's not stand in the way of Project fear of the D3\4 engine world. Whistle

As a percentage of members of this forum, those who have been unfortunate to have suffered the dreaded has to be low.

I see countless D3's and D4's everyday, they're very popular in my neck of the woods. Whilst of course I read about the tales of woe on this forum, outside of it I don't actually know of anyone or even heard of anyone who's crank has snapped.

And surely it's partly down to how you respect your Disco - e.g.
Regular oil changes & servicing.
Treating the engine with respect and not thrashing it.
.... I could go on Yawn

As someone who had nothing to gain in the sweepstakes but was following in suspense I’m surprised at such a low number. I hope the 3 who kept their broken crankshafts were able to turn them into a great piece of art Thumbs Up

We need to be cognisant of the fact that this only concerns snapped cranks. How many more have bearings that have turned in the journals, blocking the oil gallery, potentially rendering the crank as scrap? Mine for one is one of these statistics and I have the crank in my shed to prove it. It's potentially just as bad as a snapped crank resulting in a full engine rebuild and a £3k - £6k repair bill.

We also need to bear in mind that Joe @ Oval specialises in remanufacturing the TDV6 and the majority of his work is attributed to this by comparison to other independents who focus on routine servicing, general wear and tear items and other faults. As a result, Ovals numbers concerning engine rebuilds, whether that be snapped cranks, spun bearings or thrown rods, are always going to be higher than other indepedents.

Well done Andy (RRSPORT) and Colin (DISCO3/4) Bow down

So it's the tiebreak question to Colin and Andy now. How many (including the snapped cranks) did we scrap in 2019? If you're both right or both closest, I'll spilt the eventual prize between you.

Everyone can have a guess, but if Andy and Colin can PM me, I won't have to pick you out of the crowd!

Colin is at a slight disadvantage as he got rid of his RR for a L200 (traitor!). So we might have to tailor the prize accordingly.

Once we have a winner, I'll give my take on the crank situation. There have been lots of thoughts/views/opinions on the forums and I think a bit more insight might be helpful.

Good luck guys....

You could make one of the cranks the annual Crappy, Snappy, Crank Trophy. A very heavy Trophy to present but I’d love to hear the speech that would accompany it.

OK, the answers are in from Colin and Andy. I can say that we don't have an exact number and it's not a tiebreak.

Colin guessed at 22
Andy guessed at 31

The total number of crankshafts (snapped, bent, melted or whatever) we could not reuse in 2019 is 40

So Andy from RRSPORT is the nearest Thumbs Up

Well done to Colin for a valiant effort and sticking with the forum, even though you turned to the dark side Razz

Give me a call to discuss your well deserved prize please Andy.

As before, we lost a few cranks to customers for whatever reason??

We'll be back with a new competition soon. Feel free to make suggestions folks.....
