| Replacing rear upper tailgate brake light |
|
Has anyone replaced the upper brakelight on a LR3?
Looking for some information on how to do it as I've just ordered a new one today.
The old one cracked as the garage door failed to open completely yesterday...
One thing is for sure, this is one solid car! I ended up with a broken brake light and thats it.
The garage door on the other hand looks like something that just provoked Chuck Norris..

Hi Brede,
The high level brake light is bonded onto the rear hatch.....it'll be a bit of a pig to remove and then you'll have to clean the area, apply sealant and then a catalyst (or similar) to get it to bond again properly....
You could try and do it yourself, but I'd probably just take it to the dealers and get them to do it properly....
I hope this helps.... 2006 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Helps a lot Paul!
I'll give it a try when the new light arrives as the dealer is quite a distance from me.
Would it make it easier to remove it if I use some heat to soften the bonding material or will I just have use brute force?

If you use a heatgun to heat it up be very careful. The paintwork would probably get damaged before the sealant releases!
I would let the dealer have the problem. Ren Colyn

Hi,
Please, keep us informed how difficult is the remplacement.
I planned to install my rear view camera inside this high mounted stoplamp !
Also, if you can take some pictures of the inside to show available space for a camera (5 x 3 cm)...
Thanks by advance.

The only way to get it off without damageing the paint work is with a small grinder. Mask first around the light, it takes a while to remove as it requires care. Cut out the centre and then work outwards, it creates a lot of 'candy floss' from the plastic though. Be very carful to not damage the paintwork though, put a small knick in mine, fortunately hardly noticable. Anyone I asked to do it (windscreen fitter, dealer and panel beaters) wanted to respray the tailgate as well. They said they couldn't do the job without damaging it.
I got a winscreen fitter to refit though, as I could blame them if it leaked. Getting there is half the fun
