| Rear Diff just been replaced |
|
Hi, just thought I'd see if anyone else has had to have their rear diff replaced?
About 8 months ago I noticed a metalic shimming noise which could be heard at low speed & when coasting to a stop. I got the delears mechanic to come fro a ride at the time and he thought it was the brakes & yes it could wait to the next service.
After reading a lot of info on this site I then thought that this shimming noise could be related to the EPB as others had described similar noises for it. So I put it in for its 24,000 km service a couple of weeks ago and asked them to check it out. Well apparently when on the hoist it was really loud. They decided it was in the Rear Diff - had to send to the UK for another.
Anyway the Diff was replaced yesterday and no more noise. The Dealer wouldn't elaborate on what the fault was as they said they weren't allowed to open it up , had to send it back complete to Landrover, but they said it looked like bearing failure.
Just hopeing this is an isolated event .
ps also had the clock replaced as it would lose about 5 mins every 6-8 weeks !! White TDV6 SE ,ARB bar & warn winch, Rhino aero racks, Thomas super pump compressor, duel batteries, Hella spotties, UHF.

Funny, I thought it was my watch battery - my D3's clock is also loosing time. Now that you've mentioned this - its time to ask for mine to be replaced also.
Thanks.

Perhaps not
Mine has developed a (increasingly louder) whine - all the tell-tale signs of a diff on the way out...it is in for a service on Thursday and will have it addressed then, I hope I dont have to wait too long for a replacement.
GeorgeII - what MY is your D3? Mine is MY07 with 85,000 on the clock...I wonder if there is a bigger diff issue developing here or if it is just the normal 1to2 in so many thousands that fail??
The warranty runs out in 15,000 k's (about 3 months) - I was tossing up between a deisel gas system v an extended warranty. Think I'll go the warranty Tristan

i'd be mentioning it to your dealer now, just to be safe.
Have you thought about an extended warranty - or were you committed to the diesel-gas install?
I did a search of the forum for diff issues - seems to me an issue that if not common, is occurring regularly... Tristan

Interesting. My noise is exactly as described at the start of this thread. I have 73,000km, '06 model, with locking rear diff . the dealer diagnosed it as the pinion bearing, and the diff. is now scheduled to be replaced.

Had my rear diff replaced at about 130 000 kms. Noise/vibration/whine/drone sound was most noticable in top gear not under load on the freeway, and then just touching the accelerator.
Check all the iron filings on the plug from the diff.
