How often has the centre bearing actually gone if the rubber bush is caught early on?
I've used Sikaflex on my previous D3 for about 6 years and 50k miles and on my current D3 for the last year, with no ill effect. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Plus one for Sikaflex, my bearing was only held on by a quater of an inch of nackered rubber at the bottom, got some Sikaflex from Screwfix as they were still open.
As Sikaflex is very tough and more rigid than the original rubber I decided to fix it with the prop in place as any out of alignment will put a strain on the bearing.
I put the motor on axle stands and put a bottle jack under the prop to centralise the bearing in the support bracket. After adding the sikaflex all around the bearing outer ring I smoothed it to a fillet with a gloved finger and left for 2 1/2 hours to cure.
As the weather was not great and it was now 11:00 pm and as my workshop is 2 miles away from home I had to drop the car and drive home. The prop dropped by 5 mm as it was still tacky which was a shame but in the morning it had not moved any more and so far it has minimal movement, in fact less than with the rubber original. Two days later and it is still rock solid so I am very happy as a fix.
The noise is much better now but the bearing is a little rumblely so needs replacing soon unfortunately. Series 1 V8

The only thing I would add to the above how to would be to avoid getting the large cage bearing mixed up during dismantling you can split the metal casing as described but rather than pull the whole bearing out of the aft section of prop use some circlip pliers to release the circlip and slide the front section out thus leaving the bearing in the aft section and in the correct orientation.
And for those who don't manage that here is another guide on a different forum that will help with reassembling that bloody bearing!!

Just to add that I saw a replacement center CV cover/boot on eBay this week to save on the resealing?
Also, has anyone tried to remove the band from the small end of the CV cover and pull the two halves of the prop apart instead of dismantling the CV? As the pictures show the CV spider was pulled off the splined shaft with a puller due to the spring clip, if this clip is overcome first then the CV would not need to be disassembled? Series 1 V8

Once again this site has saved me loads of time. Quick look up over a coffee before I start .. changed prop on disco 3 . no issues. Thought I may as well do up the old until n sell it on. BUT the alarm bells rang loud n clear... decided not to pass on a problem to anyone else and will scrap the old unit to save the risk.

bought my d3 6 weeks ago from evanshalsaw and had the same sort of symptoms took it to land rover for a service and check out they found it needed £2800 spending on it including complete prop picked it back up from land rover today and now drives spot on
