Nothing in the workshop manual or Topix about removing the hook.

I have removed a fair few for forum members.

No alternative but to buy a new hook. Although my wifes car (Vauxhall Agila) is fitted with a tow hook (Hook, electrics and fitting £299 inc. VAT, not much more than half LR's price for just the hook) well capable of towing my small trailer to the recycling centre, but she doesn't like the way I change gear (mines an auto) so she'd rather I didn't use it.
Never mind, thanks to LandRoverCentre in Liverpool and UPS I got a quick delivery and my wife contributed something towards it as my Christmas present.
New hook fits 'snug as a bug' and you can feel behind the receiver socket to check that the locking pin is engaged properly.
Just to be on the safe side though, as the standard safety strop on the trailer merely hooks over the ball it's not much use if the hook drops out so I have added a strop that hooks up to the recovery point on the car.
Here's hoping I never need it.
Now I can get rid of last Autumn's leaves at last.
