Thanks Andy - that's very interesting; it's good to hear from someone with actual experience; I hope you will share this with us in more detail.
For those who haven't read it here's a link to Andy's thread on the original breakdown & engine replacement:-
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic83391-45.html
Did they just supply the engine, or supply & fit?
Did you get a detailed invoice from them listing what had been done on the reconditioned engine?
What was the cost, what warranty did they give - was it underwritten by a reputable third party?
Have you read the thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic80614.h...balengines - and would you comment on it please?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Engine was supply and fit, it took a week to ten days
it was block and heads with my ancillarys re-fitted and new genuine H/D clutch they wouldnt fit an aftermarket one,
The warranty was an unlimited six month guarantee on the block and heads, obviously they would not guarantee my old parts re-fitted
The guarantee was with themselves for a full unlimited mileage of six months as long as the oil was changed after 1000 miles by either themselves or a reputable garage and proof of it was sent to them to secure the full period or guarantee.
The cost was
£300 to get it collected from Stoke and transported down to essex (third party)
Then the engine bill was £4000 inc new HD clutch complete.
As i have stated before, this choice will not be to every ones liking
But i decided it was a sensible viable option for me given the value of a hight mileage well used D3 against the cost of a new engine.

Thanks Andy
£4k supply & fit including VAT & a new H/D genuine clutch seems pretty reasonable.
Did you consider "extras" like fitting a new (or recon) turbo & EGRs, oil pump etc at the same time?

Didnt consider it really, two reasons first was, my dad allways said and was usually right "if it aint broke dont fix it"
and secondly it would of only rapidly increased the cost, if the EGR`s go then ill blank em

I have just been to the garage that has our car,it is sat there gleaming ,absolutely immaculate ,but effectively an economic write off,IF it requires a new engine.I asked the mechanic (Kevin) what his gut feeling was,he said he thinks it has done the head gasket between two pistons.
So i think we need to spend that money to have that done .If its more serious then we are committed to a new engine, hoping Landrover may contribute something ( not likely). It won't be cost effective to then reassemble the car to transport it to an engine reconditioners .
It's a gamble ,but going to somebody like Global seems to be a gamble also .By nature I am not a gambling man
How about a poll ,we need a laugh
Options
1 E bay spares or repair hoping for £7,000
2 investigate resulting in possible new engine cost approx £10,000
3 recon engine approx £4,000

The place I bought mine from had 4 or 5 low mile engines in stock, all removed from Jag S-Types or Jag XF. Same basic engine
They also had a few high mile engines available, but only £1800 My D3 Build Thread

The mileage is warranted. The cars they are breaking can be seen online, and verified.
FWIW, I sold my dead TDV6 for £350 (+ courier costs) to a place on Ebay who recondition them, and its not even out of the car yet. Didn't want/ask to hear it or see it running. I assume if it is unrepairable, they will re-use the con rods/pistons/crank etc
Will PM details at some point this weekend My D3 Build Thread

A quick up date for those interested. The car was transported to a different garage (who has been recommended to us),they have the room and facilities to do an engine swap if required. The chap rang me on Saturday morning saying he had done a compression test and its down on three cylinders and has developed a small oil leak.So the body was coming off to get the heads off.
Land Rover where informed ,they have now said it MAY have to go to a main dealer contrary to what they told us last week.
They were told we are not paying for the car reassembling / transporting to the dealer ,they will be sent all the findings direct.
If an independent garage can carry out service and repairs on a new car without it invalidating the warranty ,then the same garage is capable of telling them the engine they supplied is
Hopefully we will know by the end of the week ,if a new engine is needed its a five day order .
I must thank everybody who took time to post other options for us to consider , after a few sleepless nights we decided if needed it will get a new engine.
I will keep you posted

I think you can get an engine block from LR for around £5000.
All things considered, it probably the sensible option, as at least you know what you will be getting
