While the D3 is in for a service I’ve asked the dealer to look into a transmission whine that rises with road speed, not engine speed, and is most noticeable at 50-60mph. The dealer has checked the diff oil and there are not metallic particles in evidence, so it looks like the diff is off the cards. I was beginning to think I might be imagining it, but the loaner I’ve got while mine is in definitely doesn’t make this noise.
Can anyone think of any other likely causes for a droning, whining noise that increases in pitch and volume with road speed, not engine speed, and is more noticeable when accelerating? As it’s road-speed dependant I’m thinking it may be on the output side of the gearbox, possibly something resonating? All ideas gratefully received. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Tyres? Wranglers especially well known to drone in the later stages of life, but the scorpions on mine are moaning a bit now.

Transfer Box??
I had a whine when it was around 3 months old.
First I had to really listen for it [I thought I might be trying to hear something that wasn't there].
Then over time it got louder and louder, so much so I couldn't drive it and it was off the road awaiting a new transfer box.
Been fine now for the last 3 years. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Hmm... Scorpions, about mid way through their life. Doesn't sound like tyre noise, although "moan" is closer to the noise than "whine". It's almost like the sound of the early moments of a jet engine spooling up and is most audible when accelerating, less noticeable on a trailing throttle and as good as absent when decelerating.
Because it's not dependant on revs I'm considering every element of the transmission from the output side of the gearbox through to the tyres, but the way the noise appears when the car is under load has me leaning towards something mechanical/fluid not being right.
If the dealer can't find the source I'll swap a couple of the wheels/tyres for two new ones I have in the garage and see if the noise continues. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

It's a thought. A wheel bearing would match the noise and the fact that the rear lightens when braking would be a good match too. What's kept that low on the list of possibles (for now) has been that there is no variance in pitch or volume whether going straight or around a bend, when usually a bend in the road would lead to the faulty bearing making more noise when loaded up in the corner.
Just to add to the list of conditions, the noise is also present when I put the 'box in neutral. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Small point, but I would have thought the front bearings would go before the rear?
Then again, my rear discs went before the front??
Anyway - are wheel bearings covered by warranty? I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

you are right, you can usually pick up wheel bearings when cornering, & they are usually as noisy decelerating, as accelerating.

I also get transmission whine on mine... but only when cruising on the motorway and you lift off... press the go pedal again and it stops. Even a light press on the accelerator will cancel it out.
Only a slight whine and no one would know unless they knew it shouldn't be there. Dealer diagnosis...? I will give it a try I guess.

Should get an update tomorrow lunchtime. If no joy at the dealer from the mechanical bits then I'll jack it and swap the wheels to see if it's the tyres I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
