Cheap fix for GPS Aerial.

I have had a few gps antennas failed lately in the shark fin and was looking around for an alternative even the breaker yards want £50.00 for a second hand one, so this is my fix for £6.49p.

Hi Flack,
My understanding was that the GPS antenna was in the upper brake light, not the "shark fin". Is this wrong?

Best Wishes,

Not seen a GPS in a sharks fin before, just the little thing bonded as part of the upper brake light. This thread will really confuse those with satnav and no sharks fin fitted.

IIRC that's only the case on cars without the phone kit, so if no fin, its under the brake light Thumbs Up

I think what Flack means is if your gps fails Instead of breaking your rear light unit to get at it just buy the cheap Alternative unit and Relocate it in a/or shark fin which is what I done when I Retro fitted my sat nav Thumbs Up

Woody, that's not what Flack's pdf says, so its worth a read as he identifies a part in the fin as the GPS antenna. This came as a bit of a surprise to me.

Robbie

When I bought my car it had no Sat Nav fitted so I installed all the kit from a RRS, I did not want to remove the rear brake light so I opted for the shark fin aerial thats fitted to the RRS as this was a much easier fit and it has the GPS and Phone aerial, or just the GPS depending on year.

As I have changed a few lately on RRS/FF for failing and knowing that a few guys on here have done the same as me and fitted a shark fin aerial, I thought I would post it up for those who have if there aerial ever fail for a cheap fix.

I am going to also post it on the RRS Forum but edit it for the RRS. Hope this clears the misunderstanding up. Thumbs Up

Hi Flack,

Thanks for the clarification that the fin in your pictures is actually from an RRS - I thought I was going mad or blind for a moment!

Thumbs Up

Now it makes sense, good option if GPS in tail gate light fails. Thumbs Up

I have the bluetooth integration and GPS but no sharks fin - what's it really for as I see a variety of older and newer cars with it but my 2009 HSE doesn't have.

A variety of things have been in the fin over the years and it varies a little by market.

Sticking to the UK D3 and D4, the early cars had an option for a phone kit that could wire a suitable phone to an external antenna for better signal - the antenna lived in the fin. As phones with external antenna connections died-out the pod disappeared from UK cars and the phone-prep became bluetooth only.

The pod made a reappearance when DAB radios were introduced and the fin became the home of the new antennas for the DAB.

In other market the pod is the home of the satellite antenna (eg USA).
