Thanks to all. Tried WD40, key just keeps turning.
May have to admit defeat and call a locksmith.
Have my D3 from new, the love affair is definitely over!

It can only be a charge needed in either the battery or the key, perhaps AA may be a better option Must stop buying shiny toys....

A locksmith may be unable to help.
Your lock turns but the linkage is not unlocking the door.
A locksmith's skills normally stop at getting the cylinder to turn.
Sorry but hope to avoid you wasting your time and money.

On reflection think you may be right ronald.soak.
Going to try and get a charging pad tomorrow as suggested by darrind.
Will post how it goes.

Fortunately the tooth brush charger comes in the box with the cheapest rechargeable Oral b brush on Amazon £20 inc the charger so shouldn’t be a huge cost to get one in a supermarket to test - just lean the key on the charger post overnight and you should be good hopefully Must stop buying shiny toys....

I would be tempted to keep using WD40 and keep trying the lock as well.
I totally agree with what's been said about wd40 but I also think it has its uses, cleaning gummed up locks is one of them.
If it works I would then suggest cleaning with brake cleaner and applying the graphite powder once fully dry.
We should all try and lubricate the lock at least once a year and I'm as guilty as the next man for not doing it.
It is a very simple task that anybody can do and is so important when you get problems like this. Andrew

there is also a WD40 version for cleaning electrical contacts ... shifts the gunk and dries quickly. advantage over brake cleaner is it comes with a straw system to allow you to get it into small gaps.

I tried using a key in a D3 emergency lock on Sunday evening.
Although the key appeared to turn the door would not initially open.
I pumped in WD40 and found that the key had to turn further, to about 45 degrees from vertical before the door could be opened.
Having been successful once I was not able to turn the key sufficiently to make it work again before applying more WD40 and even then the cure was not permanent.
I am convinced that the problem is in the linkage because when the door is unlocked the key can easily be turned through the necessary angle.
I don't know if the WD40 is working it's way into the linkage but you only have to get it to work once.
Hopefully the key charging will have worked for you.
John

Interesting.
The linkage is remote from the key barrel

But did you manage to get the door opened once as that's all the op needs. The lock can be sorted out at a later date Andrew

Many thanks to all.
WD40 still not working for me, however, I managed to get a Oral B toothbrush charger this morning.
Just placed the key, battery side, against the charger.
Will post later today how it goes.

I think it charges from the key blade end.
Not sure how people couple them

In all honesty I think the problem is the car battery. These will go flat after 30 days when car connected.
Where as key batteries tend to last ages
You need to apply power to either the starter motor or towbar electrics (check behind the cover to see if you have sockets)
That's where this one ended up anyway:
