Brake gurgling - recall done

Just noticed when driving the vehicle (without the radio on!) that when you hold the brake pedal down you get a gurgling noise from behind the dash. A quick search on here indicates that there may be oil in the servo/booster.

The recall was done in early 2011

Disconnecting the joint in the revised vacuum hose reveals a small amount of oil - I'm assuming there should be none.

Car still brakes OK but pedal goes a hard when doing an emergency stop

I don't think that the recall was done correctly in the first place but I have no way of proving this any thoughts if I can get LR to admit it was not done correctly when such a long time has passed.

Has anyone any recent experience that I could use as an example

When you say pedal goes hard doing an emergency stop, does it kick back in pulses or just stiffen up? If it's pulsing, that's more likely to be your ABS kicking in and pulsing the braking circuit.

(Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!)
 Cheers,

Gareth

No apology needed

Theres no ABS kick in - it just goes very hard to push and you feel as though you are not stopping - up to 35 mph its pretty much OK but above that if you do an emergency stop the initial stopping is good but you then just feel that the brakes are not working unless you push very hard

Does sound like oil in the brake booster. Rolling Eyes

I would be going back to the Land Rover dealer who did your recall work to tell them their Heath-Robinson bodge job has failed already. Whistle

My recall work was done in 2008 and I've not experienced any such problems since. I suspect there was already oil in your brake booster before they did the work and they didn't bother to replace it at the same time because it would have cost more.

Mine went in for the recall - twice, the first time they just fitted the revised pipe, a short while later I took it back because, like you, the brake pedal would go hard on emergency braking, as though it had "run out" of vacuum for the assistance. I must admit though I never noticed the "gurgling" noise.

On the second visit, after some too-ing and fro-ing between the dealer and LR's warranty dept. they agreed to replace the servo FOC as it had oil in it which hadn't been noticed when fitting the new pipe.

In my view, if you have oil in the revised pipe, designed to prevent migration of oil from the vac pump, it can only have come (been sucked up) from the servo which suggests that it's most likely been in there all along.

As crwoody says just had mine done brake servo , master cylinder, vacuum ,booster all replaced by LR , Had the tell tale boiling noise when stationary with foot on brake . Took them a few days for LR to come back and agree , but they don't really have a leg to stand on

@Jonny Teflon was this recently?

I have phoned LR Customer Services who stated verbally it would be covered under the recall and to book it in with the dealer

Booked on with dealer as a breakdown as they have no spaces until 21st March - ill let you know how it goes.

I know - I had to take in as a breakdown as no appointments available which wasted 3.5 days but as a brake issue wanted to make the point it was urgent

I think there were some negotiations with LR which delayed it
