Windscreen problems - anyone else seen this?

Had my screen replaced by autoglass in March and the last few weeks as the temperature has dropped I have noticed that a number elements have been failing and its like looking out of prison bars when driving along.

Autoglass are coming out to replace the screen on Monday so I'm not too bothered about that aspect.....

This morning I got in the car and the screen was full of really heavy condensation - it was like being back in a car in the 80'2 with no a/c and loads of moisture in the air

I kind of guess the two are related, but could there be something more worrying afoot ? Anything I could check (The carpets appear to be dry so I'm happy there is no internal water leak)

It sounds like you have a water leak somewhere.

If the lines are on the inside of the screen, they are probably
left by water running down the screen.
We have one in about 50 leak and thats the first thing
you look for to see where te water is coming in

Hi, is your engine coolant level OK? only condensation on inside can be caused by a leaking heater matrix or pipes/hoses to it (amongst the other things you have already checked), but you would have probably smelt the antifreeze in the car also if it was this. It sounds more likely to be to do with a bad sealant job when you had screen replaced.

problems solved.

Faulty windscreen to blame for the failed elements........poor installation to blame for the condensation. Seems like there was a part of the bottom of the screen that was not sealed properly allowing condensation into the cabin.

A lot happier now - just need to clean the rest of the car to match the new glass!

Funny thing - I had a windscreen replaced by Autoglass and the exact same thing happened Whistle
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

The windscreen has just cracked on our D3, starting from the centre, running about 8 inches up the screen. Having had a windscreen on a Merc replaced by Autoglass 4 years ago (called Carglass over here), and seeing the real bodge job they did, I'm not likely to let them near the D3.

I think that our best bet is to take it to the dealer and ask them to change it. Hopefully they won't just call Carglass, and we'll get a properly fitted, OEM, sealed screen with heating filaments working properly and A-pillars properly fixed down. If the insurance company insists on Carglass, I think that I'd rather pay myself; at least then I can be sure that the dealership will get it right and follow up properly if there are problems (God forbid).

By the way, does anyone know if a crack like this (no stone damage) is a warranty job? I'd be very grateful for the advice.

That sounds like it could be a stress crack from bad fitting. Its worth a call to dealer I suppose. I think that you would get a genuine parts screen no matter which company fits the screen.

Unfortunately i have been fitting windscreens
for the last 10 years ,on and off, probably done 4500 or more by now
A windscreen wont crack unless hit by something or it
has rust underneath pushing it up.
If it cracks for any other reason then there is a problem with your car
although this is very rare.
If you can, paint over any scratches the fitters do to the paint, after the glass is removed.
This is why you see rust around the windscreens in cars
a few year after they have had the screen replaced.
Removing a windscreen is a "violent" procedure and puts a lot of pressure on the paint work that cant be seen once the screen is back in.
Paint it if you can. insist on it if youre keeping the car
I cant make this point any stronger without SHOUTING.

Thanks, Gareth, we'll let you all know how we get on. The dealership here is generally quite good.

I asked Autoglass for the rrp on a 05 hse spec with heater element and auto wiper sensor......£960.00!

Next call was to insurance company getting them to fit!!

Autoglass - the NFU's windscreen company of choice ..... AAAAAArrrrgggghhhhh. Autoglass fairly ruined my D2 by not replacing the seal - water everywhere, on floor, running down inside of the screen. When they tried to fix it they thought - on both occasions - I'd be happy with a black sealant gun job Banging Head If you have to let them near your D3 at any time talk through what they are proposing on the phone first, and watch them like hawks.

I feel much better for that. And I'm sure, somewhere out there, there must be a decent (or even half decent) auroglass fitter. Rolling Eyes
