The jack, I’ve got an Arcan(ISTR) 3t jack from Costco. Suuuuuuuuuuperb bit of kit, solid as a rock & no twisting. Plus goes very low, whilst having reach for D3/4s, so usable for “normal” cars.

Thanks all, for the advice.
If money were no object (within reason, say a few hundred quid) what jack would you go for? I’d like to get a better one for next weekends retry of the same job.
Also would you put down some 18mm ply or something similar under the jack, to allow it to roll better? My driveway is okay but not exactly ice smooth!!
Clarke CTJ3000 is what I use. About 95£.
And yes pop a plank down, itll roll easier and save you making dents in your drive 2014 D4 XS

Just ordered this from SGS. Plenty of lifting power and good reach along with a decent 130mm jacking pad. Beats the cruddy 50mm pad on the one I tried to use yesterday!
Bought with a spare pad too with delivery tomorrow for £107.00 so good value I think.
I’m going to get a heavy timber base cut too, thinking maybe to top it with a piece of sheet steel too to give a strong but smooth surface for the jack to work from. If it had some thin rubber sheet bonded to the underside too that would give it great purchase on the tarmac drive. Something like a 3mm rubber sheet then 25mm hardwood PLY and then a 2mm steel sheet screwed on top.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Indeed the 130mm pad has roughly seven times the surface contact area of the 50mm pad. Coupled with a better footing and a higher lift without the need for the silly extension bar thingy.

What’s the saying, there’s no new accidents, just short memories.

I really wouldn't bother with all that, just use a sheet of ply. It's not going anywhere with a ton of weight on it.
I've used a sheet of ply on gravel and it didn't move.2014 D4 XS
