Right, so tonight I will be bandaging my hands into small bundles in the hope they will have shrunk three sizes...LOL
Got the part from LR and the wife is on stand by to jump in with the pliers once the trim is off...
Fingers crossed for tomorrow then....

Ok..all done. Thanks to the great instructions available here, it took just over the 2 hours mainly due to not being able to find the 8mm socket for the actuator removal.
Anywho....right hand is lacerated to hell but have the feeling of achievement and also a great sense of one-upmanship as I phone the local non franchised LR garage to tell them to stick the £380 / 2 day repair as I had done it myself for the princely sum of £22.58....
Cheers Twizzle for your help and Pumpkin for the encouragement.
Kev
ps. as a tip for anyone else, start at the far left of the trim when trying to remove the carpetted section. Its a whole lot easier to pull the plastic upright section out and work from left to right....
I think it is time to update the doco and put it on the wiki. Did anybody get a part number for the replacement latch?

Yup Pumpkin posted a few post ago...
FQR 500220 - Part number....In total I was charged £22.58 for this. Its the latch and cable complete.
Tools needed are a few blunt knives or tyre levers,
Phillips screwdriver to remove the top plastic trim once the tailgate is open.
Long nosed Pliers to remove the clips holding the tailgate straps to the lower tailgate and pull on the broken cable.
8mm socket for the two actuator mounting bolts.
Torq set for the three bolts holding lower tailgate latch in situ.
Total time I agree with was roughly two hours...
Other definate tools needed are one small child with tiny hands and a torch. Either that or ensure you have plenty of Savlon as your hands will get ripped..
In all everything went back together no problems except for losing one of the clips from the underneath of the plastic tailgate top trim. However they are identical to speaker clips so I had plenty of those so no sweat.

Hi,
I posted yesterday under General -> Unable to open boot, and was helpfully directed here.
I have spent a very frustrating couple of hours trying to release 'the carpet' and got nowhere. Am I attacking the right area of the tailgate?
It seems to me that the carpet is attached to a fairly substantial piece of (I think) plastic. You can see that levering has caused the carpet to come away from its base. The carpet edge seems to about half an inch up inside the trim. I can't see how I can bend the trim up sufficiently to pop out the carpet.
Also my boot area looks different to those in the instructions. The trim that covers the tailgate hinges and bumper is in my photo but I can't see it in the photo in the instructions. It might get in the way of the job, but I can see no way to remove it.
I am at the point of giving up and just handing the car over to the main dealer in Aberdeen to fix.
Anybody out there who has solved the problem and lives near Montrose? I would willingly hand over money to someone from the forum than to the main dealer!
Any further help and advice as usual much appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob

That is the right place to attack, it just needs more force than you think. Took 2 attempts over christmas to do trust the trim not to break. Are those cycle spanners in your picture? found they where the key to the job eventually. My carpet trim did a little peeling back initially you need to push the spanners in further any damage can be masked on refitting otherwise a new carpet trim piece is about £45 if it annoys you.

Just a thought here, but if you had some 32mm blanking grommets, where would you cut a 32mm hole in the carpet such that you'd have direct access to the release mechanism with pliers in time of crisis?
I know that when this day comes my hands will be too big like they are when working in the main interior fusebox, so I was wondering whether I could prepare a shortcut in advance.Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Well I had to give up - couldn't get the tyre levers (tried metal and plastic) to grip the edge of the carpet.
Thanks all for your advice and encouragement.
Took the car to Town and County in Aberdeen (LR main dealer) who quoted 1 hour and stuck to that. The service manager said that they had tackled quite a few, and a couple of their lads were experts at fixing the problem (small hands I guess).
Anyway, bill including part (latch assembly) was £92.63 + VAT, and the car was washed, and cleaned inside. Excellent service.

Hi All,
I can't seem to open the Technical Repair Doc for the boot. Have downloaded it twice onto different PCs and neither version of Word will open it !!
Can someone check it for me or resave it please.
My boot won't open of course !!

It might be worth getting the new design of latch fitted before it lets go properly and is either an expensive repair or real PITA. The part is fairly cheap and is not too difficult to fit, might be a good bit of preventative maintenance I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Update !!!
So used some thin cycle spanners I got in the market to prise the carpet bit off. You're right it takes some force to do it and I bent the spanners in doing so. Thats the relatively easy bit !
I found some carefully place tennis balls keep the carpet section bent back and that gives some room to work in.
I then a pen to keep the plastic cover of the actuator forced back.
I can feel that the cable end has come off the actuator mechanism so that explains why I could hear the motor doing something but the boot not opening !
Its a devil of a job to get any sort of purchase on the actuator with pliars of any kind. Have given up for the moment because hands are cut to pieces but I reckon the Stealers must have a tool like a little hooky thing to get on the mechanism. Going to have a go at making one !

Trim clip tool or similar, and a hammer. Tis what i have used to get the cable out of the actuator assy. It is very tight to get out though... My D3 Build Thread

Just had this happen to me and it's the actuator that's failed. It's been a bit sleepy all last week and then failed completely yesterday (Saturday). Thanks to this thread, I was able to access the cable and open the tailgate. The cable's is in one piece and no breakages. The actuator makes no noise when the fob buttons are pressed so I'm assuming it's duff.
Does anyone know the part number for the "liftgate latch actuator"? A Google search has revealed zilch!.
