I think it uses the low pressure pump which doesnt damage so easily. Not too sure though..Duncan

... Can I just ask, why run the pump by removing the relay & shorting out the terminals, as opposed to just switching on the key when you've connected the hose to the valve ??
The low pressure pump will only run for a short time, 30 seconds or so I think, with the ignition turned on but without the engine running, saves having to keep turning it on & off.Clive

Strikes me as a very valuable tip, should you find you self in an isolated place with a fellow D3 (or otherwise) driver and need to 'donate' fuel from one vehicle to another to keep moving ...or is there a simpler way if it's diesel that is being 'siphoned' off rather than petrol??

This post saved me a fortune...
Last week I put 31L of unleaded in my D3 before realising and then brimmed it with 52L Diesel. Drove home 4 miles, then started to worry.
Found this post and followed the instructions from which I pumped out 90L fuel, purged through with new diesel and restarted. 1 week later all is well.

... rang my Dad who's a Farmer 2 miles away and being a Farmer he's got plenty of 25L fuel containers and he's always up for £120 worth of free fuel for his tractor...
I do consider myself lucky, it would have been a big headache to dispose of. i.e. If it went down the drain I would probably have got into trouble!
In fact - I just ordered a Fuel Angel device for £45 which prevents mis-fuel accidents!

I was going to say, in an older engine add some engine oil to it and thicken it back up and run through.
I've been lucky and not done this "yet"
Both mine and the Mrs car is a Deisel so that's probably helped a tad ?
I very nearly put Deisel in an A8 the other day and realised when I couldn't get the nozzle to fit ? Only dead fish go with the Flow !

@pagoda
Many thanks for your work on this brillaint write-up. Im going to make up a kit for my car and have these instructions with me.
Just a few weeks ago I filled the whole tank on our vw polo with petrol. Being close to home and relaising my error before starting the engine, I phoned my wife and she towed me home. Had to take the sender unit off the top of the tank to pump it all out. Thankfully, the petrol was confined to the tank and this was the only thing I needed to clean out.
Felt a right chump !! but I blame my age Chris

I work in insurance and the amount of claims received for wrongly fuelled cars is quite staggering. However the good news is wrong fuelling is often covered by a full comp motor policy (check your policy document!)
From memory the average claim was about £4,500, however our worst claim was for a new BMW M6 fuelled with diesel then driven, at first fill up from new, which was £35k plus.
Anyway for the benefit of anybody that makes this error here is what you do:
If you realise you have put the wrong fuel in at the pump, do not do anything to the car, by this I mean do not touch the remote door locking, turn the ignition, try, open any door or even pushing it to move it off the forecourt, just leave it as any of the above actions can activate the fuel pump (modern cars pre-pump fuel in readiness for the ignition to be activated).
I realise this can be difficult as often the fuel station staff want it moved, but do move it, hold your ground on this.
Then phone your breakdown service e.g the AA (other companies are available!) Who will usually arrange for a specialist company to come and drain your tank.
Just in case you don’t have a rescue service here is one of the companies that offer this service
