When the kids were young and I did the school run I used to fill all the seats. Taking it in turns with a friend who drive a Voyager to bring all the kids home from school.
One of my closest friends doesn't drive, so we used to take all the kids out either on day trips or on camping holidays packed into the Disco..... They are all grown up now and on our last trip to Alton Towers they watched Final Destination (the one which started in a theme park) on the DVD on the way to Stafford.
Now, they only get used for the odd family gathering when the FIL doesn't want to drive. As you slide down the banister of life

dt disagree, unless van based virtually all 7 seat mpvs need pre planning or empty boot to use. for us a lack of seven seats would mean extra cars being used, taxi not an option for a trip to london, seaside, etc. we never really carry a boot full unless its planned tip run etc and as such the stuff we carry can be placed in the remaining boot space when the rear seats are in use.
the big black mat is left out unless vehicle is inuse as a load lugger, work vehicle, tip run.
For LR to leave out a 7 seater would leave a hole in the range which other makers are filling, but LR are the only one of the 4x4 makers whose seats are really big enough for adults to sit in.
My only real gripe is the access to the spare wheel winch.
Used at least once a week for children - 2nd row is not suitable for 3 children so any lengthy journey (anything over 5 minutes) 1 child in seat 6 with the TransK9 crate on top of seat 7D4 2010 HSE Santorini Black

We use ours all the time, but i have the middle 2nd row seat removed and the two boys found they like to sit back there better.

2 adults, 2 kids and a seven seater. Just ordered the D4 as a 5 seater. Reason is that we never used the 7 seats (maybe 10 times in 7 years, and that was something we forced us to do). We tend to travel with a lot of gear, so the Cargo Barrier (VUB501170) is installed most of the time and just too awkward to get out just to show off our wonderful car.
As to whether a 5-seater FFRR would then be better? Nope, we love lugging around everything plus the unnecessary stuff. FFRR is too small...

London-Canterbury return 7up in my old D3 no problem, perfect drive and handling. Adults in the third row were comfortable enough too. I assume my D4 would be similar if not better. Tyres were set as per the book.
