Depending on where you place the tuner, you could splice into the incoming power for the GVIF. It takes 0.1A or so...

...and if you want a video player, I can recommend a RasperryPi with OpenElec (latest addition in mine I hope to add to the guide at some point! 8) )

You'd still need a power source though, and a hefty one at that (1.2A or more, if you power the HDD off the Pi)

Will look into it, might just hard wire off the ciggarete lighter, how do you get the video output from the pi to the gvif? I look forward to the guide!

I have just watched a youtube video, looks impressive. How do you control the functionality through the pi? obviously you get what is appearing on the screen but how do you select items to play etc?

I have an older Pi B, so still has the analogue (RCA) video output (though the newer Pi2 also outputs video from the 3.5mm jack). That currently feeds the VIDEO-IN RCA source of the VEBA DVD player (though I plan to feed the GVIF AV2 source directly). Long cables needed if the Pi is to live in the glovebox though!

Kodi control is currently achieved either by a separate USB IR remote, or by smartphone (excellent Kodi control app!), as both are on static IPs in the car through a 3G/4G router. The plan is to do the OEM screen hack at some stage (search for Wiggs' guide on that), so that I end up with the touch screen controlling Kodi.

Everything (Pi and external HDD) is powered by a 12V to 5V converter (eBay), which has four USB charging ports (2x1A, 2x2A).

that's great, thanks. It looks like the possibilities with the PI are endless. Control through the standard LR touch screen is the ultimate goal
