Off to the dealers again...
So the ongoing saga continues, with an hours worth of road testing and investigation booked for this morning.
After 3 dealership trips which resulted in a replaced front diff, the rumbling/faint grinding noise continues, and if anything has got worse.
It is now probably more obvious at 30mph than the 55mph previously......oh joy...."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Well, they reckon after a quick road test it's the tyres
If it is the Grabbers, they're the loudest they've ever experienced
I'm struggling with that explanation as after putting 18'GG's on my D3 I didn't notice any change in road/tyre noise.....
Surely the 19's aren't massively louder ?
Anyway, the 20's with Scorpion Zeros are going back on next week, and if it's the same I've to go back..."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I went from 19" Scorpions to 19" Grabber ATs in December and barely noticed any difference. Its not the tyres. They are just clutching at straws.

When I went from the orginal Goodyears to the GGs I find they are noisier, but its not too intrusive, whether you would classify it as "significantly noisier" or not I don't know. Could it possibly be slight inaccuratcy of 4 wheel alignment?
Euan, I am going to the RTV on Sunday at Kidlaw (near Haddington), could you make it there and I could listen as a comparison?Joined the BMWX5 45e group

It would be a relief it was, not knowing where a noise is coming from does your head in after a while.
Had a very slight noise issue on my D3 when it was new. The dealer eventually tracked it down to bolt on the n/s wing which had been tightened up with the washer on the wrong side.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Would not be surprised if it is the Grabbers. 3 sets now and noise has increased the more they are worn.
Easy test though dealer can just swap all 4 wheels over from one on the forecourt and road test, you could sit and wait for this job rather than losing the vechicle for a day or two.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

That was the plan....Unfortunately,they didn't have another suitable vehicle in the workshop to swap wheels and tyres with this morning...I will have to wait until I swap my "Summer" set next week.
It shouldn't be wear either....they were new in October and have probably only covered 6-7k "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I did say a few months ago tyres in your original post Re failed diff ?
Mine are about on the limits if usefulness and all 4 are nearing 5mm, I have noticed a considerable increase in road noise this last 5k miles ?Only dead fish go with the Flow !

You did indeed, but having had them in 18" with no issues,I thought it was unlikely as the evidence seemed to suggest,as you say, that the noise issues are only after significant wear
I personally don't think its the tyres, and would have swapped them today to check as its driving me mad.Unfortunately we're going to Glencoe to find some white stuff next week, and I'd rather leave the AT's on for that "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Amazed
Hi
Am I just being stupid here but if the dealer thought it was the tyres would it not have been a better idea to try all the cheaper stuff before replacing the diff ie tyres, bearings then shafts and finally the diff .
I'd be well surprised if it's the tyres could they not put a set of oe wheels and tyres from another car onto yours and take it up the road oh sorry that's to simple it's the dealer we are talking about. let's start on all the expensive stuff first then look at the cheapest options.
My D3 had a really weird software problem and it took the dealer two weeks until I eventually told them to try downloading the vehicle build software from gaydon fixed in two days and it's been going sweet as a nut ever since
Cheers

When I put my grabbers on for the winter, I'm convinced they are noisier than last year. My thought is that if they've been fit so the direction of rotation has changed then maybe they are noisier????? Just a thought.
In my line of work I test drive loads of cars, you'd be amazed what noises tyres can make.

Right.....swapped the 19's with GGs over today for the 20's with Scorps.....and after a very brief road test, the racket has all but disappeared
I'm still struggling to get my head round the near silent running of my previous 18' GG's on the D3,and the unholy din the 19's have been making on the D4 ......I need to do more miles first, but everything is pointing to them being the culprit....
