Sounds good

Can you be more specific about what you got done? And of who?

Thrust bearing washer appeared through rear main, drive shaft rattling about like a baby's toy..

Reconditioned engine supplied by them and fitted by a LandRover tech.

Drive shaft pulls spun, snapping chain on os bank,

Nws recovered the car, rebuilt the engine, road tested it for 200 miles and returned it to me with a full tank of diesel

Not at all. The engine was £3600 (I used eBay to get nectar points) and it cost me just over £1000 to fit including all belts, gaskets and glow plugs.

Been told they're good

Have cheeked up NWS up at a couple of big serious car dealership that's doing business with them, and they have only good words to tell me about them, and guess they want thing sorted.
Liked what I heard.

I've always been a fan of letting the engine warm up sufficiently before any heavy load is put on the drivetrain - not by temperature gauge (coolant) - the engine and oil take a lot longer to warm up - about 15 minutes! I always did this to get the best life out of turbos on Audis and now for the engine on the TDV6! Thud

I hope u mean driving the car and not let it idle? Because in idle the engine wont get adequate oil pressure. Personally I would not let my car stay idle in cold temperatures on startups. I think that is very bad for the engine.

On the other hand,

How many of the Disco3.co.uk have had their engine repleaced?

Like Nr1rolf here, this is a massive cost in Norway. It would almost be better to sell the car without engine and take the priceloss to rebuild the engine.. Thats not good. On the other hand I dont think anyone would really buy a D3 in Norway with engine failure..

In Norway there are not many garages that have experience with changing engine on D3, mostly just the LR garages, and they are expensive!! And I dont think its cost efficient to get this job done in another country (Poland, UK etc) because there are additional costs that brings the total price up.

D3 is a wonderful, wonderful car in so many ways, but this engine (read bearings) problems are beginning to be a headache to the owners with some miles/km on them..

No sitting idling, I'm talking about driving the car at lower revs and with a light foot until the engine and oil are up to temperature. A lot of idling is not good for diesels, whether oil pressure is low at idle or not.

According to your previous post in this thread, your mate was stripping it. Are you going to rebuild it with a replacement crank?

No it's not worth it , the block has been scored from where the shell has spun, so it would have to be fully stripped and then line bored etc and one of the rods had got damaged from the broken crank, if it wasn't for those bits , I would have just replaced the crank and dropped it back in again, it's just the fact of its so much effort to get it to this stage you may aswell be 100% certain etc.

Do we have any statistics on how many TDV6 engines who have failed because of bearings and not oilpumphousing?

I guess there would be possible to read out of the threads etc, but maybe make a new poll to investigate this?

Something like:

1. Replaced engine? Yes/No
- If yes, why? Bearings / Oilpumphousing / Other (specify)
2. Miles(km)
3. Serviceintervals (oil and filter): xxx miles/km
4. Type of oil (Make and viscosity)
5. Do you use additives? Yes/No
- If yes, specify product and serviceintervals
6. Are all glow plugs functional? Yes/No
- If no, how many are defect?
7. How often do you use your car? Days per week

Could any admin consider this? It would be very helpful and provide good information about the scope of these failures.

Thanks.

Perhaps a user poll is in order mohnwalk. ie, votes could be:

1. no failure: over 100K miles
2. no failure: over 200K miles
3. Crankshaft failure (breakage)
4. Oil pump casting failure causing release of timing belt
5. Bearing failure
6. other failure
