Mike, I re-interate mine doesn't make that noise on startup, so to say all tdv6 engines do is incorrect, but it fair to say that most do Mark.

The only time I haven't heard it, is on an engine that has been switched off, and re-started very shortly after. Even on those engines with new oil pumps
The length of time and volume varies, with how worn the oil pump is My D3 Build Thread

Your engine will not fail through this, as Mikey says all engines do it, the newer and less worn engines may only do it for a split second and have less volume to the degree you don't hear it. It is caused by the hydraulic cam follower self adjusting, the more the cam shaft and cam follower is worn coupled with lower oil pressure the longer and louder the "tap" will be, hence the name "tappits.
This used to be a common problem when hydraulic cam followers where first introduced and engines where running on thick (by today's standards) oil, modern synthetic oils where not available, the cam followers where prone to stick and the only solution was to strip down and clean or replace.
It's a fact that the camshaft and cam follower are the components that are under most metal to metal pressure on a engine and being positioned at the top end of the engine suffer most from oil starvation on start up and are literally running dry until the oil pressure has buit up and the oil light has got out, this is why engines should never be revved until at least the oil light has gone out.
The tapping and wear is caused by a combination of high milage, poor or wrong oil used, prolonged oil change, lack of oil pressure, revving the engine on first start up.
It only becomes necessary to do something about is when it is there continuously.
You don't say what milage your car has done. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi M3PDO
The car is 120k km now.
Until 90k km the owner maintened at deallership, from 90 to 115k I dont know, was other owner. I bought with 115k and I had this noise only on cold cranking. As I use to have a complete oil change when buying an used car, I used Shell 5w30 and at 120k km changed The oil pump and used Motul 5w30. Not sure wich spec but The shop is one of The non official Land Rover authority here in Brazil. The noise is higher now, than when I bought, with The oil I dont have a clue which was. Now I have The noise every 10 minutes with engine off, not only on cold cranking.
By The way, I fitted a stock new oil pump. Is there an improved one instead original part? Somehow The thread made me understand that! Can anyone show me The part number for this cam follower so i can study a little bit about The issue? I really want this noise to go away!
Thanks a lot

As I and you don't know the spec of Motul 5w30 I would change it along with a genuine oil filter(makeing sure the inlet on the bottom of the filter is fitted correctly) for Shell Magnatec and contrary to what I have already said, in your location subject to ambient temperatures you may even be better with 10w30.
If you have fitted a new oil pump you can't do any more economically, I don't think it is economic to change the cam follower's at this stage they are doing what they are designed to do, when the tapping is continuous it's time to examine them.
Did you have the cam belt and HP fuel pump belt changed at the same time as the oil pump? - not noise related but imperative that it is changed at 105k miles or 7 years. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

No, there are no more belts. Did you fit oil pump p/no LR013487 ? This is the latest pump with strengthened areas around belt tensioner mounting, also these tend to put the oil pressure light out more rapidly on start up. If that is what you fitted, there isn't much more you can do (apart from a top end overhaul )to alleviate that rattle.

The High Pressure fuel pump drive belt and tensioner are located at the back of the engine behind the battery and should be changed with the timing belt at 11k miles or 7 years, although if it fails it will not do any serious damage just stops the engine. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
