Might be same as mine. Indie said last week its the hydraulic tensioner on the cam chains on each head.
Sound on mine goes after 30 seconds or so when engine cold sooner when engine hot ...thinner oil?. Indie says normal on TDV6.

Hello numpty, thanks for The inside.
I am using Motul 5w30.
Have a new oil pump and new timing belts. Nothing changed after The changes.
Shal we be worried? I am alwAys afraid once this engine has a lot of fail history!

Sound is normal but perhaps takes a little longer than mine does to go quiet. At our old house we used to park on a steep slope and it would always take a little longer to go quiet when pointing one way up or down slope. Can't remember which way.
Edit: here is the original post http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic9305.html 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

It's normal, something to do with the time it takes for the hydraulic tappets to fill after the car standing for a while -------------------------------------------------------------------

Possibly EGR valves nearing end of life. There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.
RLD Spare Wheel Protector
RLD Sump Guard
Narpy Style RRS Grille from Beanie
Discostick 3rd button FBH controller
IID BT
EGRs Blanked
Geoff Gearbox Flush
Prospeed sliders & compressor guard

Pretty common and lasts about as long as my first engine did on startup
My replacement engine doesn't do it. I did mention it to the fd of the place that rebuilt it and he just said that they build them properly. Mark.

Could i be the nrv on the oil circuit not working? I don't know if the tdv6 even has one but my Lotus Carlton had similar issue and that was the Problem.

Essentially it is something like that Doz. Either nrv or oil seals passing. Mines done 55k and is still quiet on startup. Mark.

Thanks everybody. Pi really apreciate your comments.
So, do I need to do something to get it fixed or can we live with that?
All I know is very embaracing when you startup a fancy car like that and get this noise. Feels like a falling apart car!
Thanks

Mine makes a similar noise on the first start up of the day, only nowhere near as loud. Mine only makes the noise while the oil pressure light is on, around 2 seconds or so. As soon as my oil pressure is high enough to extinguish the light, the noise stops.
Does your noise continue after the oil light has gone out? Freelander SE 2005 Auto.
D3 TDV6. Gone.

No, it is very sincronized to the oil lights. As soon as the light go away, the noise stops.

Hydraulic tappet sticking, usually caused by prolonged oil change, inferior oil or mixing different brands, try changing the oil for a thinner oil (0wx30) for 2 months, you may have to live with it unless the sticking tappet is changed. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

A complete flush wouldnt be more safe/efficient?
The fix or change of tappets is hard to do?
