It'll be interesting to see how the D5 will fair if the Defender does become the natural heir to the Discovery 3 / 4.

That's my personal belief and if it appeals to me and at a sensible price then the D5 will be away.

Drove from Sevenoaks to the Yorkshire dales and back again over the weekend. Saw 1 black D5 ... I'm shocked at how few I have seen ...

I see at least one most days.

And I don't mean the same one every day. Different ones in different areas, all over the country.

Got one on our afternoon dog walking route so can see it close up. I pointed it out to SWMBO, not saying what it was, and she said words to the effect that it was piggin ugly. And she hasn't seen the back yet!!

Being forced to look at it for a while (old dog enjoying a rest stop) it strikes me that the front is just as bad as the rear. The grill is too thin (top to bottom) and the lights same, just looks like Mr Manwaring without his glasses. Piggy like. And the step in the roof looks like a complete afterthought, as if it's a vestigial throwback to proper Discos. Like the stupid asymmetric tailgate.

My opinion, there are other opinions out there. Allegedly. Laughing Laughing

I like the Captain Mainwaring comparison! Thumbs Up

I was passed by a D4 while I was out in a RRS loaner today - that D4 really is a stunning looking car 8)

Blimey ... I'm surprised you lot see so many ! Seriously, not sure what is going on here in Sevenoaks. I think we pretty much cornered the D4 16 plate Landmark market. Every other car is one ... Very Happy

There are only 2 around here, in an area that jumps all over new model "premium" 4x4s, as was the case when the RRS2 came out. Deffo not flavour of the month. Thumbs Up

At least D5 owners will have a very "exclusive" car! Laughing

Please, can someone tell me if D5's are only made to order or if LR has a pre-determined number of D5 units to each market?

Cheers Wink

Manufacturers usually decide how many units a market will take and then set about getting their dealers to commit to taking those production slots.

Those dealer's then fill those production slots with cars that they've either sold or (if sales aren't so good), put into stock, pre register or churn demo stock. As manufacturers take their orders from the dealers, manufacturers can normally then say that all their cars "are built to order" (even if the car is not sold to an end user).

Great explanation RM! Thumbs Up That's more or less what i thought. French LR dealers will get their agreed "quota" of D5's but if they realise that they won't be able to sell as many, it will be too late to cancel orders from the manufacturer, is this right?

Cheers!

Not wishing to rain on the parade, and having cancelled my deposit from over a year ago for the D5 due to the visual appearance and engine choices, I would mention that it takes months before a new model becomes a regular sighting on the roads. I purchased a 2013 L494 RRS ex showroom soon after launch and it was a long time , maybe four or five months before I saw another one. After 18 months I p/exed for a 2015 model losing £14k with 16k miles. Now , with the same mileage but 2 years later my 2015 car will lose £24k ....however good discounts are now available to soften the blow.
However...vis a vis the RRS (which at the time got slated for its posterior and no longer) and the D5, you couldn't get a get a pre owned one for ages , and there was a 12 month waiting list, whereas the D5 seems readily available new or with low mileage.
