After a recent trip of a few thousand kms travelled on mostly gravel roads I've been having some issues where my D3 won't start - fault codes logged seem to indicate a communication fault on the can bus:

I may very well have found the issue this evening however. Just thought I'd check on the wiring around the transfer case module - found a large harness plug with some previous repairs done on one of the can bus wires. Solder join is very close to the plug so I thought I'd check the resistance of the join, turns out when I wiggle the wire it goes from low resistance to high to open circuit. So looks like as a first step I need to remove that pin from the connector and rejoin it properly. So I had a bit of a play around and I can't seem to find an easy way to remove the pin (obviously didn't want to use too much brute force and stupidity) without possibly damaging it. Any one know how these pins come out?

You need a pin removal tool to avoid collateral damage. Pretty shocking repairs in the photo so they will all need to be addressed and the original twisting of the pairs restored.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
Well, I did remove the electrical tape from the wire near the plug if that makes any difference to you For what its worth I found the original owners post on here from way back in 2009 - seems like it was originally rodent damage and it was repaired by the local dealer
Anyway from my playing around with it the wire has now broken (didn't take much) so the pin defiantly needs to be removed.
Had a local auto electrician have a look at it yesterday while I was at work (I'm 1400km from any dealer/land rover specialist). Not too sure excatly what he's done as I wasnt able to be there and he's reinstalled the battery. All was good yesterday but my wife gave me a call today to say the faults back and the car wont start. So I guess after work today I'll be checking to see whats been done (if all was good I was just going to leave it until my days off as I work 12hr shifts). Does anyone have any wiring diagrams for the canbus and or any tips for fault finding?

Got to be easier to totally remove the h+l wires from the original plug and rejoin using a new superseal type plug, untwisted wont hurt for short runs.
I suspect that's what the sparky has done, wont know for sure until Im able to check it out in another 7hrs or so. I did read in my LR repair info that untwisted for 4" or so is acceptable for repairs
Ok time for an update and hopefully some more help from you guys. Sparky has had a look and didn't have the suitable tools to remove the pin from the connector plug. So he's then joined the wires into a seperate plug (deutsch connector so no worries with the quality of the connector). All seemed good for on day however it had a major dummy spit with my wife driving and I recorded the following fault codes:

When that faulted I decided to have a look at what the sparky had done (as Im in the middle of my work swing and all was good at first I originally decided to just wait until my days off). So as mentioned above all looked ok apart from the connector with the previous faulty wiring was not in the original spot so I mounted it back in place. Took it for a 30km drive and no worries. All was then good again until tonight when it again faulted. Fault codes from this time:

Now the Vehicle dynamic and instrument cluster lost communication with each other fault is understandable since they are at opposite ends of the can bus network. Whats interested me is the lost communication between the instrument cluster and the transmission and transfer case. Looking at the can bus wiring diagram they join together and then run through the faulty connector, to the engine ECU, through the park brake module and then to the instrument cluster. So I've gotten a 60ohm resistance reading at the OBDII port of the HS can (120ohm for an open circuit - which works when I disconnect the plugs). With my wife watching the multimeter I've wiggles and jiggled all the wiring around the connectors between the instrument cluster and transfer/transmission common. No change to the ohms reading so it seems as though Im not affecting any of the circuits.
So if its purely a can bus issue then I guess theres also the possibility that Im having an issue with the park brake module as all the comms need to go through it. Thoughts?
I also got thinking about some of the basic stuff - brake light bulbs - both not working (wasn't really an issue as I've got a kaymar bar thats got brake lights) So I've swapped the bottom tail lights for the top ones and now the brake lights run as you'd normally expect. I'll monitor and see if the fault comes back.
Alternator and battery. Battery was replaced earlier this year after the last one just died overnight. Checked the alternator output and Im getting 14.5V after startup, however after reading about checking the AC volts I've done a quick check at the battery and Im getting between 0.015 and 0.03V AC. Normal or too much?
Sorry about the long post, but I need to post up all the information to give you guys to best idea of whats happening and I'm not real keen on just throwing parts at it until it starts working again.

Might not be any help as i havent messed with canbus on the trucks for the best part of 3 years now, but it was same set up with 60ohm resistors and if an item/ecu failed it caused havoc, favourite was the trucks tachograph
We had a newish 64 plate going mad the other day, would run and select gear, but the entire dash was dead and again was the tacho head.
Im sure you have looked but have you tried a new brake light switch? used to be advised on here to carry a spare.
Update, its not the brake light bulbs as fault appeared again today. Maybe its my wife as it seems to go fine until she drives it and then I cope the 3rd degree over the car not starting

If it only occurs when one of you drives the car then the humble brakeswitch would be at the top of my list.
Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
its only been happening with my wife lately since I've been trying to solve the issue. Previously it was happening all the time.
Brake switch is on order anyway so just need to wait for it to arrive and trail that.
Little bit more of a follow up. Disco faulted for me last night, and previously when its done this with me driving I havent had any fault messages on the dash, but this time I got park brake fault displayed. Im getting this fault logged for the park brake module:
• C1A55-64 (A8) Ignition switch input circuit - Algorithm based failure - signal plausibility failure
Leads me back to my original thinking that the fault is originating from the park brake module

Just thinking about "odd" things - does your wife need to move the drivers seat and then you move it back etc. There is a loom under the seat that may be frayed and give these problems.
One thing I have been tracking lately is that every time its faulted the headlights have been on. Not sure if its a coincidence or not just yet but thats been the case for the last 3 faults
