The crank seal is a wiper; it isn't under pressure, and has a drain hole behind it. So using the car whilst keeping an eye on the sump level should be fine.

Well, had the car looked at the time, all cleaned off and test drive no problem found. The car has been fine until now, obviously leaks don't generally cure themselves so I assume the leak is very small. I am now thinking that the sump has become porous ( I had this on a fiesta) any thoughts on this welcome.

Had the same issue with mine. A tiny hole rusted through the sump next to the temp sensor. The amount of oil looked worse than it was. Replaced sump
