Right the dust has settled so would like to bring this post back to life.

A few questions and your thoughts on this please,I was thinking of getting as much infomation as i can on my situation and all the other people that have had engine failures/crank failures and what the outcome's were and mileage and see if there is a pattern/common problem and challenging Land Rover with it.

Should i start a new post with a poll so people can log there failure.

What other sites are there i could post on to capture as many people as i can.

Has anyone challenged them before about this.

Or I'm i p Censored ing in the wind here Thumbs Up

I feel that your engine should preferably be stripped by an independant expert who can give evidence if neccessary.

I am very suspicious that the surplus valve from the vacuum pump could have blocked an oilway causing oil starvation, or partial starvation.

If you must strip it yourself how about videoing the entire performance?

Good luck.

Would a blockage in one of the head oil lines cause oil starvation at the bottom end though. There is more than one oil line isn't there, so it would only starve the top end.

Or am I talking rubbish Confused

Glad it is up and running again, which is the main thing.

I had to have the big end shells replaced and rod bolts replace in my M5 earlier this year due to the BMW dealer leaving sump thread in the sump when carrying out a repair in October last year, which in my opinion caused oil starvation to number 8 shell (furthest away from the oil pump). I spoke to the dealer when I found out what had happened, they didn't offer to look at it or try and fix it so I carried on having it repaired by an independent. I spoke to the dealer who said that they would not support my claim against them and refund my repair costs.

I spoke to the MD of BMW UK, the national manager of BMW Customer Service and all I ended up with was a cheque for the original repair back, my extended warranty terminated as I had fitted a performance exhaust and now no local dealer to go back to. If you tried to take the dealer to court I very much doubt you will get very far at all as you have repaired the car yourself and it will turn into six of one half a dozen of the other. You would also have to hope that if you did take them to small claims (the cheapest way I believe) that you had a judge who understood engines etc...as proving that a dealers poor work caused engine failure through possible oil starvation is extremely difficult in my opinion.

If you do take them to court, then the very best of luck to you.

cheers and good luck

The BIG question is, how does a part for the brake servo end up been found in the engine? The incompetent person who let it get in there should be answering questions(this may not have caused the problem) but still not good to find a part in the engine that should not be there.

In my experiance with dealer problems and LR you will get exactly nowhere but always worth a try.

I agree, much like my case where they left aluminium sump thread in the sump and not being magnetic has gone god knows where. Even though their work was poor I got nowhere and they dug their heels in big time because I mainly had it repaired elsewhere and they could only go on my work and the independents say so which they weren't having any of.

Always worth a go, but the amount of stress it gave me was unbelievable over the whole thing.

cheers

Hi zarnd and sopjas thanks for your comments,I would just like to make something clear here as this is going in the wrong direction.Right the part from the vacuum pump i'm not worried about,I'm not going to try and take land rover to court but what i am trying to get to the bottom of is why some of the early disco's suffered big end failure, then in 2007 they changed the design of the crank shaft,so anyone reading this and the same happened to you please drop me pm.So what im not sure of is the differences in them apart from the main bolt size m14 to m16 so are there any other differences Question.

What I'm thinking
I bought my car for around £30k this was meant to last me a very long time,I wasn't worried about the general running of the car like the dash lighting up like a Christmas tree every other week, cant open the door, cant get in the boot, suspension bush,s hanging out that's just land rover for you,but I didn't expect to be fitting a new engine after 58k I wouldn't expect that on any car let alone a prestige one im not trying to upset anyone i just want to know why,I will start stripping my old crank out tomorrow and see what I can see Thumbs Up
