Broken Down - Possible Engine Failure...
Hi,
Sitting in McDonalds waiting for 2nd recovery truck as I've just been recovered from the Motorway.
Cruising at 70mph, very slight shudder (I thought I was buffeted by a passing truck - it's very windy) and the engine cut and I cruised to the hard shoulder.
Tried to restart at side of motorway, very slight crank, but wouldn't turn over. Now, I've no faults before trying to start, but engine won't crank, when I try to I get a slight noise, but then HDC lights, orange EPB, come up. Battery is fine. Irritatingly I left my fault code reader at home.
Waiting for another recovery vehicle to take me home.
Any thoughts please? Anything (easy) to check when at home please?2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

Take the oil filler cap off, and watch to see if the camshaft turns whilst you try to turn the crankshaft slightly using a socket and breaker bar at the pulley(may need to gain access from underneath and have a helper) Well that's what I would look at after reading fault codes first if possible.Hope it's not what is becoming a common occurrence

Probably know it anyway but make sure when recovery truck comes all your four wheels are on the back of the pick up
Did you have any lights on the dash when it it out, daft Q, but will it not crank or has it not got the power to crank?Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Could be another 1 to add to the list of cam belt tensioners failing this week ,im in pole position 1 your a close 2nd if so ...sorry . What year is yours not a 07 /57 i hope.???
it does sound like something is locking it up, the socket and breaker bar is the best test for interference Altox GSM FBH controller thread

May have to test the excellent Warranty Direct... They overhauled the auto box last month to the tune of about £3K. Will check what's covered tonight.2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

When something similar happened to me on my old Defender 90, it was the alternator pulley bearing had totally collapsed causing the pulley to seize completely. This prevented the engine from turning. Yes the aux belt is strong enough to resist the starter motor! Couldn't figure it out at first, then I removed the aux belt and it started like a pro.
I know it's a long shot but it costs nothing to try. Remove the aux belt and try to start the engine. You'll probably get a million faults if it does start, but at least you know what's stopping the engine from turning over Dennis
