Auxiliary drive belt tensioner
Mine was the auxiliary drive belt tensioner. Easy job to do yourself; took me about 1.5 hours this morning. It was properly broken ... picture attached in the gallery!
I would recommend getting the special tools to remove the fan though. I got mine from PowerfulUK at fairly reasonable price. Had I not had these, the job would’ve been a nightmare!
The car sounds like a Rolls Royce now! Well almost!

It’s a poor mechanic that can’t tell the difference between a belt tensioner rattle and a big/little end knock, as Mikey says big end knock is more predominant under load, blip the throttle two or three times you will hear the knock as the engine revs climb and it will be diminished when when revs decrease, similar in sound to a machine gun burst, volume depends how bad it is, don’t do it to much though as if it’s bad you may have a big hole in the side of the engine block :club
A “slightly bent” spigot suggests the oil flow has been restricted rather than stopped, so it may have been getting some oil but not enough to cause immediate bearing failure. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
