Engine knocking noises
2005 TDV6 auto 130k kms
Started an engine knocking noise a couple of days ago.
Initially thought it might be bad fuel, but no.
Then tried the injectors, removed leads one at a time, no change.
Have now changed oil and filter and filter valve thingy was a bit squashed. Haven't driven far enough yet to hear if it has made any change but not hopeful.
Am also thinking it might be exhaust manifold leak, sounds like its on drivers side.
Any other possibilities?

If the filter is like shown in this thread then unfortunately it will likely be that the big end/main bearings are knackered due to lack of lubrication - from other cases like this it is likely that further use will result in the engine stopping in a terminal fashion.
How long since the last oil change?
Hope this is not the case for you but....

10,000 kms or 6,000 mls
Oil filter was slightly bent near the spigot, no where as bad as the photo.
I'm getting really worried now!

Hopefully someone more optimistic will be able to suggest other things to check.
It may be a loose or broken bracket somewhere, if it is the exhaust is blowing you should find a soot deposit by the leak.
If it is the bearings you can now get replacements, which although expensive are still cheaper than a new short engine (crank needs to be reground and rehardened/nitrided).

On most cars there is a valve that allows oil to bypass the filter if it is blocked - yes the oil might not be filtered but at least it circulates.
I assume that when the oil filter in the TDV6 is inserted incorrectly there is little or no oil getting into the filter then why doesn't the oil simply bypass the oil filter like most other cars.
ytt105 - there has been a lot of doom and gloom mentioned above and that information might be correct but.
Half way from Euchuca to Melbourne - 100km. Melbourne to Canberra about 700km.
So you have traveled at least 800km towing nearly 2t of van at I assume 80 - 110kph with this issue - sorry but I would have thought that if there was any issue with the lubrication the engine would have died early in your trip - long ago.
Irrespective of all this professional diagnosis is required - unfortunately there is no one in Canberra I would recommend as you will need deep pockets.
Good luck with it

I hope your right Gary, your thought process is what I'm holding on to.
But it does sound a lot like in the above link, but not as bad.

Assuming the noise was reduced lubrication induced main/big end bearing noise - possible moved bearing shells - and was noticed 100km out of Melbourne then the initial damage was already done - there is no way that an engine would last another 800km and then not fail.
You would have had complete engine failure before Melbourne.
The basic diagnosis should be look for the easiest, obvious issues first and take it from there. As you have been doing - determine where the noise is actually coming from first.

Two mechanics have advised it sounds like a gudgeon pin or big end bearing, probably cylinder 3.
I presume this is a complete engine out and rebuild problem, not something I can do cheaper.

That does not sound good at all. It may be a rebuild or a new engine required.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Further update to the nocking sounds
I've had the sump off and there is NO metal to be seen.
I've just taken the fuel relay out and when turned over by the starter motor, NO noise!
So I'm thinking its in the fuel system somewhere
The local dealer had a listen and thinks its in the injectors, so its going to go to them to have the injectors looked at.
My thinking is its the HPFP or more specifically, the fuel pressure sensor, but still it throws NO error codes
Can I buy a pressure sensor or do I need a complete HPFP.
Where can I get one and how much should I pay, likewise if it's injectors?
All very expensive in OZ!

There will be no noise, as there is no load on the engine...My D3 Build Thread
