I had a non OEM one fitted last year and you can't tell the difference. Heated screen works a treat, the quality of the fitting was excellent as was Autoglasses service. Product and workmanship are gauranteed so if i had an issue I'm protected.

Is it really worth the hassle for OEM and is it really that much better? Just think how many non branded products you all buy and use day to day. As an example, I'm sure most people on here are happy to consume 'off patent' pharamaceuticals without thinking about: Nurofen vs. Sainsbury's own label.

As for the concerns about products of 'Chinese' origin, for any of you having surgery, guess where most products that will be used or implanted in you now come from?

The insurance companies of course want to save costs but they also don't want future hassle with poor quailty products coming back to haunt them. As long as it meets the correct spec, quality control and is properly fitted it'll be fine.

As I've said before, sometimes I think people get a bit precious. Life is just too short to worry about things like this.

Does it say Safevue or Shaterprufe along with Solarshield?

If so, I think it's the South African Glass that some fitters have been using?

I don't know anything about that make - but for the other copies, things to look out for are:

The heating elements being physically thicker in your line of sight.
The black edge around the screen being larger (actually reducing the screens usable area)
Ribbon connectors being visible from outside the car next to the A pillars on both sides.
(These are often bright yellow on the Chinese copies) - so an easy spot!
The heating elements not working across the whole screen or failing to work more than a few months of Winter.
Glass seems to chip more easily?

If you haven't noticed any of these, it's probably fine. Thumbs Up

When I booked mine in with Autoglass I told them unless it was a Pilkington Optikool they would be going back with it as the Land Rover was fitted with a Pilkington Optikool and that is what I wanted it replacing with. First they told me that it could take up to 3 or 4 week to get one, I said "Fine, I'll talk to my insurance company".

They rang back a little later to tell me there is no such thing as Pilkington Optikool anymore it would be Solarshield screen. Told them again it had to be Pilkington Optikool and if they arrived with anything else I would be sending them back with it. They called back a little later and asked me if they could fit my "Pilkington Optikool " screen today.

Like I said in my thread, I found Autoglass installer very professional, and from what little I know, he did a first class job.

The only problem I had really is that the new screen is heated (as its all they could get) and I now have to get the controller with the switch on it so I can start using the front heated screen.

It is a Shaterprufe screen. I had not noticed any difference in thickness of heated element, nor the black area on edge of glass. Compared to driving our MX5 it is like being in a goldfish bowl anyway Laughing

As for Autoglass, they were very good. Agreed the first screen was poorly fitted - apparently too much adhesive. That was why those little plastic clips for holding car park tickets were about 5mm away from screen. Now I know one way to check the fitting.

I've just had a solarshield fitted a couple of weeks ago... To be honest, I really can't tell the difference. And as my original heated screen had started to lose some of the heated elements and had pitted in places, I'm looking forward to the winter this year.

I too made my wishes very clear from the start and ever since but Autoglass Rochester seems comitted to ignoring me and playing dumb.

Each time Autoglass confirmed I would get a non LR branded Pilkington Optikool screen and each time it wasn't in the van. Hmm! Once I can understand. Second time with increasingly elaborate BS I become suspicious.

In fairness Privilege have been very helpful making calls to AG on my behalf and calling me back as promised. AG have been patronising and unresponsive making me feel like I was being handled and not heard. Today I felt like I was practically being talked over. I don't buy the excuse that my OEM request was mistaken for insisting on a LR stamped screen and I have low expectations despite the callback from AG today and promise a screen will be ordered from Pilkington's tomorrow and will be fitted even if it has to be manufactured.

Why do some companies think treating customers like idiots is ok? I was even told Pilkington's isn't good quality glass as if I'd change my views on the no name screen they were trying to dump on me. I'd wager Pilkington and Bausch & Lomb are the only glass makers most people have actually heard of so they must have done something to earn their reputation and the loyalty of this forum.

the sanction busting move...

ask Autoglass if they will fit the screen that you provide..(which you get from your local LR dealer - next day delivery.
Then they realise they lose the smaller profit onthe whole thing....i.e the mark up on £80 to £90 isnt that much
You then make a claim on your insurance (check this out before you actually do)

My insurers said yes---then told National Windscrens to get the show onthe road

I have to renew my Jag Insurance this month & I am going to check out the glass part of the policy....

Just had a long and very enlightening chat on the phone.......you will NOT get a Pilkington screen from Autoglass as they no longer deal with Pilkington.
That's why they're digging their heels in Rolling Eyes
I understand the screen you will get from Autoglass is manufactured in China by a company called FY....and is inferior to the OEM Pilkington Optikool screen.
The windscreen companies bid for the business from the insurers, and the lowest bidder gets the contract....that's the way the World works of course, but it's not a like-for-like comparison based on quality.

Useful bit of info - considering Autoglass apear to have most of the market sewn up, not good news - not sure I'd want a Chinese copy?

Now you know why they have the market sewn up......basically,from what I understand,if your windscreen cover is with Autoglass you won't be getting an OEM Pilkington screen...no matter how much you jump up and down.Theyre undercutting everyone else for the insurers business, and paying it for it by offering inferior products ......allegedly Whistle

It's highly possible there were still a few in their system/stock,but if what I was told was correct (and it certainly makes sense based on a few peoples experiences) I wouldn't hold your breathe if you want one from AG again...... Thumbs Up
That was a week previously, and the following week, the OP was told there were none in their national stock Ner Ner
AG told the OP that all Optikool screens are going directly to LR now and they can't get them.......that would appear to be Bullsh*t.......it seems AG aren't stocking them for the reasons I was given above

Ok so what's the best bet on getting a proper Opticool from now on then?

To National Windscreens do them, or will it have to be a buy from dealer job?

I will be interested to hear how Paul's "chat" with Autoglass goes today, and what the outcome is before answering that.
I'd like to point out I have no vested interest in this.....I just Censored hate BS Evil or Very Mad
Does anyone know if your insurance docs say who your windscreen cover is with ?
