I bought my D3 in May and on our first family camping trip to Wales i had my first experience of this. I had stopped at some road works, applied the handbrake and when i tried to relase it, it wouldn`t. I had no idea what to do so just turned off the ignition thinking that if it`s electronic it may reset. Thankfully it did and managed to get to our destination.
It happened again whilst away so sorted by same method.
I have spoken with mechanics at work as they service our company D4's and they state it could be expensive just because of the actual man hours involved.
They gave me a run down as one was in for a service at the time and informed me that the best place to start would be with a complete cleaning of the rear brake system with a suitable cleaner and to eventually reset the back adjuster with 7 clicks, no more no less. This apparently is the standard setting by LR and this could be a cause of the problem if not previously set correctly.
If this does not sort it then it`s possibly a faulty modualtor and this could then be expensive due to it`s position up under the center of the rear axle behind the spare wheel.
I`ve not managed to give mine a clean yet but it`s on my list of jobs to do.
Had no problems since apart from when i park up and it gives a small squeel to remind me
Once done i shall give an update as to whether it solved the problem or not.

Hi,
Great LR specialist garage available that doesn't charge Main Dealer prices in Blessington. PM for details as promotion isn't allowed here

Can I STRONGLY suggest that those with continuing problems do something proactive.
Drive to the LR head office in your D3's and park them on the EPB at all the entrances and exits, barriers and gates...
The cost of replacing the unit/system to those "not covered" by warentee is as much as most people could hope to make in a day (£500-£900) and the satisfaction of closing down LR for several hours, probably longer when trying to remove those D3's who's EPB has failed, would be well worth the time, fuel and effort...
Alternativly then do the same at the factory/assembly plant. For those who have had a failure at speed on the road it is a dangerous fault and you could be saving someones life..possibly your own by getting LR to accept this as a design fault.
I was recently put off buying a D3/4 because of this EPB fault. Previously because of suspension issues not being paid for (now sorted).
I also considdered leasing one but found that any out of warentee claims for mechanical/electrical breakdown not accepted by the manufacturer/authorised dealer as a fault would be at my own cost as an additional "service" item/fault caused by misuse!!!
I suspect that LR think they can continue to sell lots of D3/4's and ignore the issue..
If you raise it in a way that they cant ignore by instructing the dealers to fend off any claims then they are really stealing money from your pockets...
Anyone who cant be arsed to fill out the form and write to LR HO is lucky..they obviously make enough money to afford a D3 so dont mind people taking some of that money from their pockets and poking them in the eye at the same time..
I note there is a 160000 mile D3 (Ex HSBC) with an EPB fault for sale on ebay.. £8,300 and NO OFFERS in 5 days
Might be an indication of how well known this fault is now and how much it can cost to put right!
Also a possible indication that the trade in/sale price of yours if you own it might well go down if the fault is not accepted by LR as a free fix issue...
Fill in the form and help yourself and others..

I too have had some problems with the EPB, in the garage as we speak. Covered under warranty thankfully but had been replaced back in August. Has since seized up twice.
Anyway,
Having millions of threads I have decided to write into Watchdog and see if they can help out. I would suggest that anyone with the same problems (as there does seem to be so many) write in as well.
I think if enough of us tell them they might take interest and help us out?!
No harm in trying.
I'll post again if I get any correspondence from Watchdog.

Land Rover after 3 weeks finally sent me a letter saying my park brake problem is MY FAULT as I didnt let them rob me of $1500 to change the brake pads and who ever did change them MAY have caused the problem! Ha.
They also say I never had it serviced - well Land Rover I did - but refuse to get RIPPED OFF by you and then have to do my own repairs anyway!
I have had it with these guys - If anybody wants to start a class action I am happy to put in the $2000 odd I need to fix the brake and use it to sue these b ds ! What say you???

All of the problems with my D3 were sorted under warranty even after the van was out of warranty the dealer sorted them FOC, but in its 140k life I have only had it stick once, followed by it failing to operate at all just wiz round (screech) that time it got replaced and recently it started to slip, but a new set of pads sorted that - no real complaints from me as it see's a lot of use - often holding 3.5 ton trailers on hill's etc.

I started having the odd issues with mine a few months back. First time I was off road in mud and it did not want to unlock. Switched back to hi-range and it then unocked.
After that every now and again it stated making a nast grating noise when putting off or switching off, fault light am on on the dash.
Went in for its service, I mentioned the problem and they said it just needed to be adjusted.
Now it has been behaving itself. Discovery 4 2.7 SE
Defender 130 TD5 - Daily Drive
2.7t Caravan
Java TD5 HSE - Gone but not forgotten.
Java V6 Freelander - Had fun in it.

Luckily have not had a locking up experience (which must be pretty scary) but on a number of occassions it screams like a banshee when it is applied.
Very funny for everyone else in the office. My wife and neighbours don't see the funny side though...

On the automatic variant, which i think is most of them, wouldn't it be safe just not to use the EPB as if the car is left stationary in "P" is not the transmission locked hence preventing the car moving anyway ?

I am currently having my second unit replaced. The LR is 5 years old the 1st unit failed at 2,5 years & 45000 Km the second failed at 5 years and 72000Km. All on road driving. Cost +- South Africa Rand 10,000 (STG850)
Know of 2 other Disco 3 with worse experience.
2 questions:
1. This is a legacy of BMW ownership. I know the same system is in place in BMW 5 series does anybody know if it exists in an X5. And if yes have BMW made any modification to improve reliability
2. Is the same system in existence in the Discovery 4

The EPB can be a pain but unusual to have them replaced. Usually an adjustment fixes it. Exactly what part failed and the cause? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Just had a few issues dealt with by the ever excellent guys at James French, including "Strip, unsieze, clean & adjust handbrake mechanism" for £ 72.50.
Working a treat now!
